This little sucker went airborn and did a couple backflips on me.  Another thread mentioned that some of us are not getting many fish to the net...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzsVGZFtbB4&feature=BFa&list=ULyzsVGZFtbB4

#1 - that type of fish on amphetamine action is what I've been seeing as well. Has to be a great indicator for healthy fish but darn.... They don't make it easy!

#2 - you must have felt that take because I didn't see your indicator indicate. blankstare

I didn't feel the take, I'll just "set" if I see the indy slow down/ hesitate, not just when it dips under water.  Every fish I hooked that day took to the air.  I only landed 1.

I had one like that recently on the EC. Small fish that fought like crazy.

Doesn't really look like a set, almost like you just lifted him out of the water. Quite the acrobat!

Went out today fished a piece that has been pounded all summer and had eight  10" and under. Even these little guys are starting to get subtle in the take. Got nothing until I changed to a fly that hasn't been used on the creek since Bernie Westin left. Size 22 glossosoma larva drew hit after hit from these smaller fish. Which points out something I've often seen: new patterns, new colors, different flash etc., work better after the fish have seen the off the shelf standards over and over after the flows start coming down and pressure increases.

I'm not a strong tyer anymore, so I look for quality flies on line that are a different take on the usual theme. And look for sparse silhouettes with sparse dressing. And buy the small sizes: both small and big fish are more likely to taste them.

I agree.  I've been using a new fly this summer and the fish have been NAILING It.

Its pink and white dubbing body with midge body thread for the head/thorax, glass bead, tiemco 200BL dry hook, sizes 20-22. Now go experiment like I did.

I can't tell if you are joking or serious. That's definitely a combo I haven't tried!

Dan-I don't kid about fishing. Glossosoma is pink/white in the pupal stage, white in the larval stage. Pupae are the free living stage as they plan to emerge. Although tiny, our fish love them. Tie the dubbing in tight and sparse to keep the narrow profile-i.e., the body shouldn't be bushy. The sparkle style of dubbing works best and if you have the powder type of dry fly dessicant, a light coating creates the air bubble (aka plastron) that aids in pupal emergence by providing buoyancy-there I gave you another tip that can be used with any emerger pattern. The pink can be banded, rather than along the full length. Try it without the pink as well. Pink alone doesn't get much action.
