Hit the creek for a bit today.  Figured it would be a little busy for the holiday weekend.  All I can say is the RV park was rockin like the old days and I had some good laughs.  It hasn't been as nuts as it was before, but this brought back some times.  Then on the way out I had a fish rocket off the bottom and hammer my indicator.  Saw this thing from 2 feet coming at me and the funniest thing is I actually tried to set the hook???WTFno Like I'm gonna hook and land it.  Still laughing at that one...

Drdan, your comment reminded me of what happened to me about 8 or 9 years ago.  Like Cole, I had a fish strike my indicator (it was a round, red foam indicator) at Putah creek.  When I got home, I began to think about what had happened.  It then struck me that the fish may be feeding on eggs.  For the next trip I tied up some egg flies.  The flies were an immediate success.  I caught several fish on the egg pattern.  Since most of the fish were small, the next trip I tried another area.  I landed a 20 incher and a 19 incher on the egg fly.  Since then I have always carried egg flies in my Putah creek box.  I know that there are many people who frown upon using an egg pattern, but for me, the egg pattern has been a great big fish producer.

I think this demonstrates that fish are opportunistic feeders and will sample weird food items on occasion. What in the world COULD they mistake a floating red object for in nature? Possibly a berry?

Gives greater creedance for attracter patterns.

I have had this happen to me on several occasions on several different rivers. My hypothesis on it is that it is a reaction strike from the fish. Kind of like a steelhead chasing a swung fly. I do not think the fish hit the indicator for a meal. They hit it with force and speed not careful gulps like a dry fly or terrestrial. Just my thought.

I think No Hackle is right trout love eggs! Since the thingamabobbers were invented I have seen several fish try to eat them. It is always good for a few laughs.
