Ok how about a different destination; Gerle creek. I've never tried it with a fly rod, have always used small spinners. Browns, Brookies and Rainbows up to about 12" but most are smaller. The creek itself is a whoppong 10' accros on average granted with the snow melt it might be up a bit though it is a tailwater coming out of Loon lake. I've fished it in the Summer with good success but never this early in the season.
Drive up on Sat morning and come back some time on Sunday. Camping at Wentworth Springs. Jeep will have a half soft top with no windows.
slight edit: I forgot about a possible mt bike ride up Mix canyon and down Gates canyon on Sunday morning. If it pans out pending my riding partners schedule then Gerle creek might be a day trip with a fairly early departure on Sat morning. Drive time to Wentworth springs campground (fishing access) is about 3 hours.

Fished in the Gerle creek area, Ellis creek, on last Saturday. It's a small creek on the Rubicon trail that flows into Loon lake. Loon is full and the fish have access to the creek at this time. Ellis is no more than 1/2 the size of Gerle, much more brush and has a somewhat seasonal flolw.
Lots of chasers but no takers. Most of the fish were small though a few were spotted that went 12-14". Probably should have headed down and fished Gerle creek but I'm still mending from a mt. bike crash and took it easy.
Around 6,500 feet elevation with low to mid 30's at night. Durring the day it was hot in the sun and cool in the shade. Perfect weather.

We used to go to loon lake every year when I was a kid. Really nice up there. I seem to remember fishing that little stream quite a bit if it's the same one you're talking about. That was right around the time I started flyfishing and if I remember correct it was little guys on dry flies. Are there some small lakes along that trail as you head north?? Spider lake rings a bell for some reason.
Spider then Buck Island with Rockbound a fairly short hike from Buck Island. Gerle creek is all Rainbows and Browns to 12-14" but most smaller and rather easy to catch in the sections that nobody wants to work too hard to fish.

Right on, it was always pretty up there. We did a little mountain biking up there back in the day. I remember always wanting to camp on one of those islands out in the lake.
Awesome — I'm going to check out Gerle this weekend now! I bought a Tenkara rod and this sounds like a good place it could get some use. Yuba's heating up too — had a fantastic time there last Saturday.
