Who fishes by big bend? Make a right turn on the pit road before big bend. Fish above Pit 5...

 Iv'e fished Pit 7 about a dozen times, Pit 6 once, Pit 5 probably 30 or so times, Pit 4 half a dozen times, Pit 3 once and still need to try Pit 2.

Pit 7 is a hoot but short lived once power generation ramps up.  Probably the safest Pit stretch I've fished as long as I pay attention to the water levels as they rise FAST.  Strip, strip, strip, bam.

Pit 6 was a death march that I wont repeat.

Pit 5 (upper, lower and lower lower sections) large average size and highest numbers.  Fifty plus fish days and my largest landed Pit fish to date at 25".

Pit 4 is an ALL day hussle trip from put in to take out or your bushwacking UP to get out at dark.  Older and wiser says I'll never fish it alone again.

Pit 3 is the masses.  I guess mid-week would work but my one experience on the weekend sucked....almost like fishing Putah on a busy day.

Pit 2 and N. Fork of the Pit...I've heard stories.

Flow changes seem to have really jacked up Pit 5 access.  One can no longer zig zag back and forth across the river to fish each little pocket, pool and seam.  The lower ones ability to access the river means ones lesser ability to avoid the poison oak.

That said, my wife still told me to go fishing  :)

December 12th

Leaving Friday the 11th to time an early am arrival with first light or thereabouts. I'd leave early on Friday but no idea on work hours/location at this time. Fish all day and drive home Saturday night. Can crash out Saturday night and drive home Sunday morning but would rather not sleep with remnants of the poison oak. Good weather and I'll drive my car (Honda Fit). Crappy weather and it's the Jeep.

Any takers?

Loooonnnng shot but here it goes. Anybody interested in fishing the Pit in early November? I'm game for driving up Friday after work and coming back either Saturday night or Sunday. Either the weekend of the 4th or the 11th. Company welcome.

 

It's only Tuesday.  Any takers for an impromptu trip this weekend?

The Pit isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but for the adventurous anglers it can be very rewarding. It should be on the bucket list of every young angler but if you wait too long in life to pay it a visit it will be too late.

Alright Cris, Pit 3 still had a crapload of people as before but the fishing was pretty darned good. It really reminded me of how Pit 5 used to be before the flows were ramped up. I never ventured down into Pit 4 as there was no need.

Offer to carpool in early November still stands, unless I head up sooner. I thought Saturday was going to be my last trip before moving...trying to change that lol.

I drove my Jeep and put 528 miles on the speedo round trip with 4 1/2 hours each way. Shave 30 minutes or so off of that with a vehicle that does the speed limit.

BTW, I've been posting in this thread since April 2012 without a single taker.

Lightfoot, Nice video! (Despite the haziness). Not much room to chase him downstream unless you swim. Those flows look treacherous. I'd love to fish the Pit one of these days... just can't justify the days away from the family... Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Dan. I had to chase a couple of fish but luckily not far. A slow (old Orvis) 3wt doesn't help. The water was a bit high but totally crossable in a number of places. Think of it as fishing Putah on steroids except there isn't just one "guide hole" or just one "staircase"...there are hundreds.

I've been fishing the Pit for 27 years. I was so jazzed when I came home Saturday my wife is kicking me out of the house to go back up this weekend. I married well. If you have never fished the Pit, put it on your bucket list. Even doing a day trip isn't that bad. Currently fishing light is around 7am. With a not in my Jeep you can get there in 4 hours. Leave Dixon at 3am, fish from roughly 7-3 then drive back and be home around 7pm. It's not that much different from my day job, I'm up 4ish and home 6ish.

I've camped here ( activenorcal.net/outdoors/off-the-beaten-path-kosk-hot-springs/ ) multiple times. The improved hot springs in Big Bend has been closed for some time but used to be an awesome spot to camp. Clothing optional, as in nobody wears any. That was prior to the increased flows in the Pit 5 section.

Looking to head back up either next Friday or Saturday (prefer Friday).  Anybody interested?

There is supposed to be a low of 24 degrees on Friday morning.  Don't let a little frostbite keep you at bay   :smt044

Went up solo. First 2 hours for 15 grabs, 7 hookups and 5 landed. Nothing after that. Major wind cut trip short.
