Friendly advice- always check for ticks after a visit to the PC. my wife was able to pull off MOST of my unwelcome passenger. I had to make a trip to the doctor's office to remove the rest. It also looks like the species that transmits Lyme Disease.

If you want to see something interesting try "tick flagging". Put a white piece of cloth on a stick and swing it back and forth in the weeds as you walk. Use white so it's easier to spot the ticks

Pulled most of them off!? Geez man how many did you have on you? I've fished Putah for 17 years and have never got a tick to attach. I've had one every once and again crawling on my boot or my hoodie. What were you doing out there? Rolling around in the grass or what?
Certain people are prone to the little vampires. They like some blood more than others... seriously. My buddy used to get them all the time mountain biking? Most of the time we're moving pretty fast. Still haven't seen a rattler out there at the creek. Just poison oak and fatties

One tick. Not all of it was removed. My doctor wasn't able to get all of it out either. Sucks. It will likely get inflamed and hopefully pus it out.

Regarding Lyme Disease, the type of tick that I read was the most feared was the Deer Tick, not found on deer by the way. They are much tinier than the ticks found at Putah. If you fish the American River canyons aka the gold rush areas, coat yourself heavily with industrial DEET and pack something serious that you know you can handle well. But beware, the ticks at Putah will attack in vast squadrons and suck you dry.
Thats Very true We had My dog Rusty with us one time < One minute he was just fine , Then I hear my wife Sarah screaming Richard Richard I run over to where she and my dog are and my dog is covered with ticks . I think they find a spot to lay there eggs , and those tick babys hatch and wait till someone or something passes by , Look at there leggs not really good for covering a lot terrain
Oddly enough, you have all those fence lizards scrambling about the Creek to thank for both the high tick count and the very low likelihood of Lyme disease. They are a primary host for the tick, but also have a protein in their blood that kills the Lyme disease bacteria. Ecosystems are funny things. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/02/21/BABR1HNDG6.DTL
Even if a tick with lyme disease attaches to you, it will take roughly 48 hours for the bacteria to be transmitted. You have some time to spare. Don't freak out. The nation wide maps showing the high, moderate and low risk areas show the Putah area as low risk. In fact there are only a few moderate risk areas in the far northern part of Ca. around the Fort Brag area. The rest of the state is low risk. Most of the high risk areas are back East. However, I dont care if it has lyme disease or not I don't want even one of those creapy little bastards crawling on me.
The amount of ticks at PT is insane. It's gotten to the point where I don't think I'll bring my dog. He ends up covered with them. They are one creature that I wish went extinct.
March - May are the worst months for ticks. I try not to bring my dog to the creek until these months are over but sometimes I just can't help it. I use advantix which works really good to keep the ticks off. I also bring a long haired brush and give him a good brushing when we are done fishing and it pulls the ticks out with ease. They can't attach into his skin as quickly due to his long coat. So that helps me a lot. I think short haired dogs get it the worst.
Went turkey hunting with one of my boys last Sunday and as we were having dinner afterward at the Buckhorn restaurant I found 5 of those nasty little b------s crawling on me. I just feel sorry for the next person who sat in the same booth we were in!! This seems to be a bad year.
The sports store at the nut tree center in Vacaville sells a lemon and eucalyptus oil mix repellant that has worked very well for me. I forgot the name but it's in the camping section. Works for mosquitos too
