3/5-3/6 - Fishing was slow
Permalink

I fished a few deep runs over the coarse of 2 days and found the fishing to be slow. The fish I caught were all with a 2 fly set up, the bottom fly a #18/20 micro may/brassie/midge. Part of it may be my need for a new strategy.

Questions for the experienced PC anglers out there:

Do you guys use split shot above your first fly for the deep runs?

Any advice for fishing the pocket water?

Are there trout in the frog water sections?

One I save enough money I'm hiring Greg for a day. Until then any advice through PM is appreciated.

PS - Poison oak and tics are out in full force!

I was also out there today, and the gusts of cold wind isn't going to make for ideal fishing conditions. Fishing isn't slow, you just have to move around a lot to find fish, the fish are on the move and you have to know where to find them. My advice to you would be hire Greg if you want the whole Putah experience or explore, explore, and explore the creek. Try different flies, look at whats in the water, and under rocks. Always try new things and new holes. To answer some of your questions, yes I always use spit shot above the point fly when fishing any run with a 2 fly nymph rig in deep runs and in shallower runs. You just have to adjust your weight accordingly to the water your fishing. High sticking pocket water is the key, I ditch the indicator when I use the high stick method. Not everyone does tho, everyone has their own style. Yes there are fish in the "frog water" sections. The flows are on the rise too, so spots you might be fishing now will not be the same or become harder to fish, and new spots and holes open up when the creek is at it's peak flow. Hope this helps a little.. Peace.

FYI: I was surprised to see a pair of bows still spawning today. So watch where you walk and avoid wading when possible to avoid walking over redds with future babies. Also I haven't fished the creek in 3 months and when I went out today I saw a lot of trash lying about the creek. Maybe time for a clean up or if someone wants to meet me out there on a weekday we could knock out some trash pick up and fish afterwards.

I meant to write 3/4-3/5. LOL!

Thanks for the info. What type of weight system do you use? I have these non-lead weights but once I put them on and close them I can't easily remove them. As a kid the split shots had the open/close mechanism on the back.

Thanks,
kb

Dinsmore and others make nontoxic weights that are soft enough and have a central dimple in the groove. You insert your thumbnail in the dimple, press, and the shot opens up enough to remove the shot without damaging the line. Makes weight adjustment a snap. Attach and tighten with finger-thumb pressure on the sides.
