Good day on the Putah
Permalink

I fished the Putah today.  The flows have been steady for 2 days just under 100 CFS. I figured that the trout may be settled in to feed before the spawn...  The first stop was a ziltch.  The second was a skunk but the third spot was worth it.  I had three to the hand mostly in the 8-10" range on a sparkle pupa and one of the largest fish I have ever *ALMOST* caught on the PC.  He took a size 20 drowned black midge (thanks SK60 for turning me on to the pattern).  I fought him for 3-4 minutes before he straightened my hook and swam away. Darn!  Pretty fish coloring up... somewhare ~ 14 - 16" I would estimate...

Still counted it....

I wonder if the bite was more a matter of water temp as this was my last stop ending ~ 3pm today...

Dan

Drdan Thanks for the post. I am always happy if I at least catch one. Plan on fishing Thursday all day even though the flow is <100.  I hooked a monster and had it long enough to clearly see it as it circled me like a shark.  My son and another friend stood there as excited and we were and still are taken by that fish.  Eight years ago and we still talk about it.

Dan,

Glad you had a "good day on the Putah."  Lol on the subject, however.  As you may know "puta" means "whore" in Spanish.  If you said that to a latino they might think you were bragging about something else.

This version of the word is of local American Indian origin and translates to something like  "grassy creek", although the other defs might be more attractive to some.

The water temp of the Creek runs 49-51 degrees 24/7 year around-the fish are used to it.

Hey now, its not "my" deffinition, its Ubran Dictionarie's.  I'm pretty sure I about pissed myself laughing after I stumbled upon that deffinition of Putah, and then proceeded to spend the next hour or so looking up other "deffinitions"........according to Urban Dictionary.

In France "Putain" pronounced, poo-ta, means whore or bitch, and is the most popular swear word in the country. A Frenchman hits his thumb with a hammer and he yells "PUTAIN"

So our creek is a swear word in a coupld of languages.

Steve is right about " grassy creek" Putah is the spanish translation of a word used by the local Patwin indians which were the inhabitants on the stretch of creek fromthe upper reaches of what is now lk Berryessa to around the town of Winters. In fact there was a huge villiage near Winters near the confluence of Putah and Dry creeks.

Actually the name came from both. When the hacienda existed where the lake is now
the Mexican ranchers referred to the more vulgar meaning as the Indians behavior along the
creek was at odds with the rancher's Catholic standards.
