Despite the on again/ off again rain, I decided to hit the creek after work. Flows were about perfect, not too high, not too low (yet). The rain didn't seem to affect water clarity, in fact the creek was as clear as I've ever seen it. Picked up a few fish here and there on the usual patterns. Noticed heavy weed growth at some of the regular spawning areas. I hope the fish will be able to find enough gravel to do their thing this winter.
Oh ya, I saw many large fish making aggressive rises, maybe it was the clouds, but that doesn't happen too often at Putah. There was a good hatch of what looked like really small BWO's.
I was there yesterday and a good mayfly hatch was on. I saw about 3 different kinds of mayflies coming off with an #18 BWO being the predominant type. I saw some rises, but none appeared to be big fish, so I stayed with nymphing small mayfly imitations. As usual with PC, I didn't see surface activity commensurate with the insect activity.
Around 5pm today I began to see some surface action in the ripples as I was wrapping up. I tried a small EH caddis and actually had a splashy rise. It was fun to at least try... I know if I had an emrger coming off the back I probably would have had some success.
