I fished Putah Creek only once before. I spent most of the time driving around and looking at the river and trying to find possible fishing spots. I ended up fishing a riffle around at access #3 and I caught a 8 incher and a 10 incher.
I see mostly long slow pools separated by fast riffle sections. Where are most of the fish? In the riffles? Are there some nice runs I am missing? Is it useful to fish the really slow water? Where are the best spots? Thanks!!!
Welcome to the Board HeavyP. I have found the slow moving water successful at times, typically early AM or in the evening I have caught some fish on dry's, the most success I have had however has been in some of the riffle areas like you mention, it has taken me a great deal of exploring, one hot spot is up near the bridge, just below and just above. I have seen many fish taken on midge patterns, I have caught a few myself, two weeks ago I saw a guy pull what looked like from where I was standing a 4-5lb fat boy out. Everyone I have seen nymphing has been using an indicator, I have only used one once, and did not find it very helpful, but to each there own, maybe I did not use it right. Many of the "good" spots you can't just see from the road you have to get out and hike a bit, but they are there. Good Luck to you, maybe we will see you on the creek.
