It was pretty good at Putah Creek yesterday, but only for small to medium size fish (at least for me). Flows were down so some of the goods spots were accessible. There was a mediocre mayfly hatch around 2 pm, but not much else. I landed 13, had 18 or so on and probably around 8 more missed takes. Most were 10-11", but 3 were 12-13". I was really surprised at how hard the 13" pulled and impressed by the solid, muscular, extra-healthy look of all the fish. I am taking the cam out next time as I hope to meet some larger relatives. Yes, I filed the survey form.
On the bad side, one of my polarized lenses flew out of my glasses, so I wasn't able to see under the water. It is really scary wading blind and it was fortunate that the water is clear so the bottom was semi visible. Sun glasses with replaceble lenses make sense except for in fishing.
On to dumb and dumber: I lost my Putah Creek fly box when I stupidly forgot to zipper the vest pocket and trying to grab a fish that worked its way under a rock. The phrase "shave tail louie" comes to mind. I can only console myself with the fact that I've hardly fished for 4 years and now I can restock the fly box with a new crop. If anyone finds the fly box, it is green and labeled "Putah Creek." If the flies are intact I'll pony up a $50 reward.
Don't beat yourself up. A lot of waters like the Truckee, Lower Sac, NF Yuba, etc. have so many river miles that fishermen can fit in all over the place. Putah, being so much smaller with a few spots that many people like to congregate, is much more crowd sensative. A few years back, Shown wrote a post about a good day in a certain hole. Much to his dismay, he was about the 12th guy in the hole by 7:30 am next Saturday!!!!

Don't worry Multitasker I thought it was a pretty good report! I didn't see any pictures of where you were fishing, so all is good. Congrats on catching a bunch of fish!!!
M: anyone sharing success on this board risks receiving a verbal beating. 1) You didn't share your location. 2) Every year a couple of guys hit the water in September and have reported days like yours, as others complain about the disclosure. 3) 18 small/medium fish in one day-thats great news-Heritage and wild trout will love hearing that.
Thanks for completing the survey form and continued tight lines.
I guess it's how you define success. Caught fish, but lost a fly box full of quality flies. BTW, I went crazy yesterday and tied about 80 flies so I'm well on my way to rebuilding.
Honestly, I was happy to catch fish, but didn't think the quantity and size would get anyone upset here. I've been hearing so many people rag on how bad the creek has been that I was pleasantly surprised that there were decent numbers of fish still making a living at Putah. I thought that might be helpful to some who have given up. Obviously, there are some here who think a message board is not the place to share ideas and information (within limits).
I am still wondering if the big 'uns have been poached out. Saw a bottle of Powerbait sitting on the sidelines at one of the notorious big fish runs.

Bob
learned my lesson on that one Bob, I think its just part of growing as a flyfisher. Notice no reports this summer. But man its been GOOD ! Get up in those hills !
I know . . . c'mon man, give us a little love. Tease us with a couple of short reports. I mean, we haven't even heard about the Unabomber trip this year.
Papaoak, you might as well be disappointed with Bono for enabling people to "open the flood gates" by having this site. It is at least as ridiculous as reprimanding some guy for posting a thorough report on said site. Did you discover Putah Creek? No, you learned about it from a person, article, or web site. Should his report should have read :
"On X date, X# of fish(X species) were caught with a size X "X fly". I fished for X hours at the X hole. Just wish I had brought my X weight. I will next time, if this report doesn't open up the flood gate for Master Anglers like Papa Oak."
I am beginning to wonder if people on this site think hoarding a thing is the same as protecting it. Oh, I'm not trying to be a jerk.( Yes, I am)

Agree with everything in your post. However, I wonder if I was being a little cavalier with information as I fish during the week when the crowds are thin. I fished once on the weekend and it was a horror show. IMO, message boards are for sharing information within limits. My understanding was that the limits were no locations and no special secret flies. I will keep the reports terse from now on.
Also, I spoke with Roger at DFG and he confirmed my fly box was found and is coming back to papa in the mail. BTW, he is a really nice guy and I am attempting to reward the DFG researcher who turned in the box. Also, one more thanks to SK.
Finally, the water was high yesterday, but the fishing was still good. Can't wait until the water drops below 400 which will open up even more possibilities. For those having problems hooking up, my advice is keep moving around until you find fish, work on your presentation (drag free drift) and make sure you are occassionally ticking bottom with your flies. Still haven't seen a fish rise or put on a dry fly!
I had a very interesting conversation with Bono about 1.5 years ago. If you ever get a chance to meet Greg ask him about the crowds on Putah back in the heyday, waayyy before this website was ever around. It will open your eyes.
Shoulder to shoulder sometimes back then during the winter months. But you know what, a lot of fish were caught by a lot of people anyway. Besides you got to see a lot successful technique and also heartbreak when the big ones broke off.
Here's how you do it. "today I managed to trip over 3 or 4 good sized trophy rattlesnakes while flicking off 15 or 20 hefty blood-sucking ticks during my waded shredding tromp through the blackberry bushes and poison oak at access X.
I'll be out of intensive care by next weekend when that black widow hatch is due to start coming off.

Not to mention the Otter which has become so accustomed to hammering fish at the creek it seems to be able to do it half asleep whilst slurping bud light. Dont know if it stole it from the guy asleep on the RV side........
The Otter is having a tough time on the creek!! Today I was watching fish rising all over the place and my catch was one fish about 3 inches long? I was really surprised to see a fish that small at this time of year. Normally fish hatching in Feb/mar would be about six to eight inches... I still think there is a normal spawn in March/april for the rainbows in deeper water. Time to put the secret weapon back to work!
This week I saw the first decent fish (12") clear water trying to nab something. Could only see midges in the area. Tied on an elk hair caddis because I am a pessimist about fishing midge dries in moving water and got a splashy take, but no fish. Went back to bobber fishing and I think I caught him or his sister.
In the past, the dry fly fishing has been decent at PC, but so far I haven't seen the kind of hatches that inspire fish to the surface. Otter, you should PM me with the location of the risers so I can do some research.
I haven't fished anything smaller than a #16 so far this summer. There are bugs around and the time to fish them is coming to a close. The hatches seem sporadic as usual but I hit it right with my buddy the other day. Mostly caddis and mays. As of 2 days ago fish are jumping on swung flies at the end of the drift. Slashing rises subsurface, love it. Don't fall asleep or you will miss them like I keep doing.

For years I've swung small dry caddis or small birds nests patterns intentionally subsurface (using split shot to get them down). Pull them between/behind rocks, through tail outs, along edges of seams, etc. Late in the day works best. Fish are seldom bigger than 10", but are the typical football-fat guys.
