Fishing rpt for Thurs afternoon
Permalink

This was my first time fishing in the summer at Putah.  All the usual hot spots were under water so much of my time was spent hunting for fishable places.  It was frustrating in general as many of the obvious "fishy" runs were inaccessable.

I hooked 5 and landed 1 small fish.  Had another 3 grabs that were on for a second and then came off.  There were no hatches to speak of and the fish seemed tentative.

The hightlight of the day came when I finally figured out that the fish were eating midge larva.  It is a leap of faith to put on a size 22 midge imitation and heave it into big moving water.  However, after putting the midge on almost immediately I tied into 2 quality fish (14"+) that both got into the current and took me down river, 1 almost into the backing.  Lost 'em both, but had a great time playing them.  I was probably never going to land these fish with 6X tippet, tiny hook and the big current.

I'm probably going to wait for the water to drop before I go out again.  It's pretty frustrating at 500 fps +.

Multi-did you complete a survey, either at the boxes or online? DFG really needs this info as part of the Wild Trout evaluation. Thanks.

You can do it here on the forum-takes a minute or less. They all go to DFG. I'm going to be a nag about this, because its a primary source (and about the only data currently) of information that DFG uses as a component of the WT evaluation process.

Thanks for the reminder Robert. Forgive me for sounding a bit cranky, but when reports of fishing activity show up here, but are not reported to DFG where it really counts, it makes HWTP's and our PCT volunteer efforts a bit harder. Its to everyones benefit to take the 1 minute  to contribute.

I'm headed to the creek tomorrow. I'll pack some midges and fill out the survey when I'm done. My first trip to Putah...so I'm not expecting too much. I'll be in a red Nissan Pathfinder, say hello!
