I am in town next Friday with a fishing window of about 1-2 hours, assuming sundown at 8:30. Got interested in PC from a reference in Tim Palmer's Rivers of California. Have read many of the posts on this site and PCT; interesting, but looks like the fishery is still trying to come back with spotty fishing. A few questions for the dedicated guys I read on this website:
A map shows 5 public access points and seems to indicate a $4 parking fee. Does this require buying a pass somewhere remote from the creek or at the parking area. And is the fee really still in force; dont want to get my rental towed.
The flows are currently reported at 621. Reference on PCT website indicated wading not useful (or ? safe) till down to 300 cfs. Should I even bother trying to wade at these flows?
Appears nymphing with caddis, mayflies and midges is the way to go. And some hopeful helgamites back in April (??). Any other thoughts worth considering with only 2 hours most to tie knots?
If I fish, it looks like a 5 wt rod is needed for some fish. I like 13" fish on my 3 wt and of course if most of the fish are smaller, I would prefer to bring this one. What would you guys take?
With 2 hours in the evening, fish the water just below the 128 bridge near the dam. Park at the survey box-you'll find the trail. Be careful when you turnoff-there is a pothole beyond the edge of the turnoff that could high center a compact car. Use 20 or smaller midge larval/pupal patterns in red or black, a #16 micro may as your top fly is a good choice. You"ll need AAA or SSG sized weight to battle the high flows. High sticking also works here; be careful wading. Fish tend to be fat 6"-8"ers this time of year-they are the "young of the year". That said, there are still 20"+ fish to be had. Your 3 wt will be fine, if it can roll cast the weight.
I don't think anyone parks in the access lots-use the shoulder turnouts. Parking is now $6 in the lots.
Please complete an angler survey form at the box and good luck!
