I'm going out this afternoon, and have yet to decide where? I have been going to turnout #5 I guess you call it, and want to try a new one this afternoon, but I am not familiar with the others. With good wading opportunities. Any info would be great.
Wish I could go myself, but alas. You may want to try whats referred to as the "guide hole", which you can find below the resort and at the end of the island. At the end of the island you will see a large pool. You'll want to cross at the end of the island where the creek forks. I go down by where the road sign is. The wading is a little difficult this time of year, but if you can cross and go up around 50 yards towards the dam, you'll see some nice seams.
I was on the river about 6hrs, hooked a few, missed a few. Saw another angler bring what appreared to be a 4-5lb trout, really beautiful fish. Now folks remember it has been a long time since I did much fly fishing, I think every flyfisherman I saw on the river today, was using a bobber of sorts. Help me out here. Is this a strike indicator? Are they trying to keep the fly off the bottom? I just thought it was interesting because I have never used such a thing. Maybe I will give it a shot. Anyway I had a great day on the river, spoke to a few anglers, but mostly I keep to myself. I enjoy to talk with other guy's, but I respect the ones that just want to fish . This is a great site, can't wait to hear some more reports. I have ordered some flies from Greg, "hopefully they will be here soon", and will improve my take on Putah.
The bobber KHB was refering to is an indicator"flyfisherman dont call them bobbers but that is exactly what they are." the idea is to be able to detect a strike and also allowing a nice dead drift in most cases very near the bottom where most of the food is most of the time.A general rule of thumb for how far from the fly to attach the indicator is about one and a half times the depth of the water you are fishing. For instance if the water is 3 ft deep then the indicator should be placed about 5 ft from the fly. These indicators come in a variety of shapes sizes colors and designs.Different strokes for different folks. Some people frown on they're use citing it's too much like bait fishing and makes fly fishing a little to easy, again different strokes.I personally do use them quite a bit unless I'm fishing close cast range pocket water and or very deep water , streamers and of coarse dry fly, emerger fishing.
