Had a great evening on the creek. 7 fish ranging from 11"- to a big fat 17" brown.
Bead head nymphs and a 50/50 yogurt. I have just started back fly fishing after about a 10 year haitus. I am very excited about the prospects at one of my dads favorite places to fish...Putah Creek.
Just a little helpful info. I fished last Saturday with a guest on Putah who hadn't caught much there. I landed 30 fish to 18inches and lost a really big one, he landed 20. Our key hot flies were 1) a baetis emerger size 20: dairiki 135 hook, wood duck tail, grey 14/0 griffiths thread body, black 14/0 thread rib, an underwing of micro pearl krystal flash (two strands as long as body) and an overwing of blue dun CDC (single feather as long as body) with a black thead head, and 2) a red chronimid size 20 with white white short wing over the hook eye made of polar bear stubble (what you have left on the skin after you tie your steelhead flies). My guest and I had such a good time that we even forgot lunch - and fished until 4pm. I hope the flies listed help you out since it sounds like you are just getting started.
Good lord things have changed a bit as far as flies go. I remember when a brindle bug, royal coachman and a wooly bugger was all you needed. I thank you for the info, you would not happen to have any pictures of these foreign bugs would you?
