Bono,

I was looking at the photo album and noticed the picture of a carp you have there.  Was it caught in the creek or in the lake?  Was he using nymphs or streamers?  What kind of flies would work well for carp?  Just curious.

Hi,

The carp was caught while I was nymphing for trout with Bono.  Sorry, I don't remember what type of fly.

In my experience, I have caught carp on nymph flies ranging from Copper Johns to size 18 zebra midges.  I seem to be surprised most often by the "golden ghost" when I nymphing in deep medium flow holes.

You want carp try fishing the canal off of Brown road behind B & J landfill durring the middle of the summer. It's nothing to see 100's in an hour. Most of the water that time of the year is only a few feet deep.

Catching carp in Putah is rare,I'll stick maybe one or two a year.Egg patterns will be your best bet but they'll take just about anything. And the earlier post was correct about the slower deeper runs being the best carp water. The picture you saw with Kieth holding a fat Carp was in the access 3 area, and I also do not recall on what fly. When Kieth hooked the fish I saw the golden color and thought it was a large brown. When we got him to net I saw the white belly and small mouth,so as a cover up I told Kieth it was a rare strain of rubber lipped brown trout hoping for a large tip at the end of the day.But Kieth not being the gullable type didnt buy my story!!!!

I've seen salmon in there in the winter and have seen people tossing big jigs etc for stripers.  The only thing I've bothered with is the carp though.  Seems like a light spinning outfit with worms would be a hoot.  Many of the carp in there go well over 10 lbs.

Granted now I'm tempted to show up out there on a Sunday with a case of pigeons
