Trot lines

Hello board its been a long time since my last post, but what i saw at the creek this past Sunday was quite disturbing.  As I was heading to a spot that I usually start my day at I noticied something large and red submerged of the bank. As I got closer to the waters edge passing empty KFC bags an empty mason jar and other garbage I could see the red object in the water was an old collaspable chair, you know the type, with the beer holder in the arm rest. As I put my rod down to go retrive the misplaced dunnage I noticed a piece of mono line coming out of some overhanging branches and down to the water. Not giving much thought to this as that is a pretty normal sight around the creek. As I started to fetch out the red chair that had been deposited in the creek I grabed the mono still in the water, as I pulled the line out I was shocked to see two big treble hooks with Two bright and shiny split shot, big heavy shot. Shaking my head I pulled the red chair out of the water and started thinking about what I just found.  Normally the rigging would be wrapped around the tree branches and not loose in the water, so looking further I followed the rest of the mono back to the tree and found a nice little wrap and knot secureing the line! Not wanting to jump to conclucions I looked up TROT lines and there it was, perfect match to the illustrations on trot line design, unbelivable!!. I did not have my camera or phone with me and no-one else around I took all the evidance with me, except the red chair which is in the garbage can. I have a feeling that making Putah a CR fishery we may have left her susceptable to this kind of distructive behavior. The bait fisherman are not gone!!

Please, please, please get on the DF&G website, or CALTip, and report this to CALTip immediately.  These are the things that need to be relayed to them.  These reports trigger continued Warden enforcement.  I understand that there has been a more visible Warden presence during 2010.  We need to support their efforts with this type of information.

You need  to provide some specific info to them regarding your find.  Again . . .very, very important.  Please don't blow it off.  You can call CALTip or go to the DF&G website and access CALTip through the link provided on the DF&G website.  Thanks.

Bob

Hi Bob DFG has been notified and I'm waiting to hear back from them. I'm sure they would be quite interested in finding the person responsible. I hope this is an isolated case, but thats probably wishful thinking.

Thanks for getting that info out Bruce!! Haven't seen you out on the creek lately. I think I saw someone with a big umbrella and some chairs fishing the area where you fish. The superhole has not been so good lately... I think there are more poachers than most people think...

Was on the creek yesterday for a few hours with my old man and found a few empty bait containers down by the creek. So I think there maybe more bait fishing going on than we think???

Hey Chris it has been awhile since i've been to the creek, with the spawn going on and all the and all the horsebleep about fishing the creek during the spawn i've just stayed away. But with all the rain and muddy waters I just needed to get out and get a line wet. I think maybe we need to re-think when we should and should-not fish the creek. It seems that if we all stay away only the takers are going to be there without worry of being comfronted. Just another way to look at this problem. Maybe more flyfishers on the water less time for the poachers. Hope to see you on the water sometime soon. Bruce

I found a bobber, split shot and a good size barbed bait hook on about 20ft of line today as well. Old habits might die hard for some people.

I couldnt agree more. In ten trips to the creek over the last two months I have yet to see a warden. Its up to the fishermen to "patrol" the creek it seems.

As some of you know I live fairly close to the creek. I make it a habit to get out to the creek when possible. I don't like to confront the people out there harassing the fish, but I have found if you just stand there with a camera they will reel up their lines.... They pretty much know what they are doing.... It is possible to fish the creek responsibly if you know what you are doing. I just ask that people don't drag flies over the spawning fish. I will be looking for trot lines!!! The trot lines are a serious problem!!

Maybe this is a little off the wall...but could you mount one of those "game cameras" that deer hunters use, focused on the trotline and get a pic of the poachers? Or focus it on the area where you're finding bait containers?

Why don't they just toss a handful of m80's in the creek and net the stunned fish? jeez

Thanks Brunocarp for the followup with DFG. 344 people visited this site in the past 24 hours. Its a safe bet that not all were altruistic in their intent. When you find this kind of stuff going on, we all have the responsibility to report it. Give DFG Enforcement a reason to increase their presence on the creek, and report it on the forum as well. It only takes a minute or two to follow up and it gives each of us more reason to be observant.
