Two buddies and I fished the Lower Stan just below Goodwin Dam on Friday, 1/7/2011. Fishing pressure was relatively light; we saw only five other guys all day. Flows over the spillway were about 200 cfs. It was cold and overcast all day.
Fishing was typical for this time of year on the Lower Stan, with chilly weather and lots of 10 - 14 inch fish. I think all three of us brought at least 10 fish to hand.
Successful flies were midge nymphs, san juan worms, eggs, red copper johns, wooly buggers - almost anything. There was a very active midge hatch starting late morning through afternoon, with fish taking the emergers during the first part of the hatch, and feeding on the surface during the afternoon. Size 20 and 22 tricos worked well for the surface feeders. All in all, a good day, but damned cold.
