I have been lurking these pages for a couple of years now and thought I should introduce myself. As a Winters native I have fished the creek all my life and pronounce it as Pu-tah not Pootah as I hav heard many of you say. I am not one to really post on forums but I will chime in from time to time. I have met many of you and have been involved with PCT a lot this past year. I hope to fish with many more of you in the future.
Question: I am wanting to learn how to build my own fly rod. Anyone know if there are any classes that I can take or where I can start?
Welsome aboard Berryessie, from what I have read in the past the creek is properly pronounced poo-tah and is named after the spanish name Arroyo de los Putos the Spaniards also called it Puta creek. The local Miwok and or Patwin indians called it Puta Wuwwe meaning grassy river. The Patwin and Wintun tribes inhabited the lower stretches of the creek or the area around Winters and Monticello dam,the upper areas of the creek near Clear Lk were the home of the Miwok. But it seems the "old timers" including myself still pronounce it pu-tah. Oh by the way the word Puta or "whore" has been said is the origin of the name of the creek but this is probably just irrelevent info.
Some guide told me about natives building that island. I then updated Wikipedia, they had it all wrong.
I think I am going to call a few shops and see what they have going on. When I was living in Tahoe the Truckee Tahoe Fly Fishers offered a class where you meet once a month and work on building a rod. If anyone is interested let me know and I will look into it.
saw something on craigslist.sf. workshop was $45,i think it said for all materials etc., look in the fishing threads.
