Hello, and a quick question
Permalink

Hi everyone.  I new to the creek and your forum and wanted to say hello.  I have had good luck the few times I've been up to the creek, and I would like to get out as much as possible in the next couple weeks before the fish (and I) start to get busy.

On that note, I have a question about brown trout.  Since daylight savings, I have been struggling to make it up to the creek with enough light left to make going worth my while.  I have been thinking that I could target browns after dark, but I would need to wear a headlamp because I down know the creek vey well....which brings me to my questions:  Are browns skittish about headlamps?

Thanks!

-Ben

If the fish arn't then California department of Fish and Game is.  Check your regulations.

The rare and few left browns are spawning, please leave them be and wait a few months before you attempt to target them if you can. Also the rainbows are starting to spawn so it's just over all a bad idea to fish the creek for the next few months.

Speaking of browns, does anyone know how many are caught each year?  Or at least how many are counted from the angler survey?

Copy that.  I didn't think the spawn was on yet.  I guess it's steelhead time.

Pretty rare at Putah for sure.  My buddy said they used to get them all the time.  If I remember correctly this was early 80's.  He said 1 out of 10 fish was a brown and usually pretty close to 20 inch class.  I haven't had the luck of tying into one at Putah myself.disbelief

They are still in the creek just not as many as there once were.. The few that still exisit just got really good at hiding, and there are some big ones still swiming around you just have to know where to look for them. biggrin

Brown planting in LS stopped in'05.  They typically live 7-8 years, so, without reproduction, they may disappear soon. A friend caught a 5" fish two summers ago, so some spawning is happening. Planting browns (outside of reservoirs) has slowed down because they tend to decimate local minnow populations.
