I am back on the 17th. Have a trip on for the weekend of the 19th but help you out sometime the week after that??
YouTube is a great resource. Got to start slow though Fox Poopah has a few components in it that can be a bit tricky if you try to tie it straight out of the gate. Start with some a simple patterns (Zebra midge is a good one) and get used to handling the materials and getting you dexterity going and then move on to more intricate patterns. Also start big !!! Don't try Putah size flies first up, you will just get frustrated and want to give up.
Anyway see you soon and happy tying.
Cheers
Alastair

This is a good site with a few patterns that you will always use:

The best bet is to sit with someone and have them show you some techniques. Learning to whip finish from a video isn't that easy.

True it does help having someone show you the basic techniques first. If you can wait Bob's class at Sweeny's is pretty good way to start. Not only will you learn how to tie some interesting patterns, but each fly you tie with him teaches you a new technique so by the end of it you will have the skills to take on tying most basic patterns.
Non the less as i said i will gladly help out when I gat back.
Cheers

PS www.charliesflyboxinc.com has a great library of patterns but you do need to know the basics first

American Fly Fishing has classes every sunday. It costs 2 bucks. Give them a call and either ask for Mike (he runs the class) or Al. Great guys and they will take care of you. And once you are done with the class you can hit the river just around the corner for some Chrome. Rich, we have classes up at the shop I work at too. Joel and I teach those classes as well. Time, patience and practice is the key to tying. You have lots of time, so get a practicing.

Rich: If you go to the PCT informational outing @ Lk Solano on the 26th of this month I'll be there tying and I'll give you a crash course, I'll also be bringing some fly tying books for a donation to PCT that as Wormfree stated are a great resource for learning different techniques and patterns, thats how I learned (when I was young I had no $$ for a class!) Hopefully I'll see you at the event. Bono
