Some High Sierra Fun
Permalink

As we all know the Sac Valley Rivers have really been on fire for trout and steelhead. And I, as well as a few others have been hitting them pretty hard. I decided that I wanted to get away from the crowds, cars, noises and smog and hit up some high sierra streams before the snow comes in and blocks my chances of getting in. I have been fishing quite a bit with richard lately and decided I wanted to show him something that he has never seen before. So off we went to hit some high sierra streams and enjoy what nature has to offer. These are no walk in the part streams, you have to be walk and wade soflty, small flys and light tippet, but once you learn its secrets, it produces some great fish. Richard and I fished it the end of September as well as 10/22. With it being so good on the 22nd, I had to get back up there. So myself and a co-worker drove up the mountain through the snow storm and fished it all over again. It fished way different from the previous day, but once we figured out what the fish wanted it was on all day long. And even though it was cold and snowing in the morning, the sun eventually came out and gave us some nice hatches for some dry fly fun. Here are a few pics from our recent adventures.

That mac was a huge suprise. He first started fighting like a big brown, bull doggin me like a fool. Then he shot upstream like a yuba rainbow, I was like what the heck is this. Then it jumped several times out of the water like a tarpon. Oh YAAAA big mac baby. What was even better is that he took my sz 20 zebra midge. Not the yellow stone or the mayfly that i had on, but the stinking size 20 midge. Crazy fish. Cool thing is that it was my first mac ever, and I got him on my fly.

Close enough Richard, their also known as "lake trout".  Correct me if I wrong but I believe they are a char species.  This post got me doing some google searches yesterday, the Lake Tahoe record is 37 lbs. so they can get pretty huge.

Called mackinaw in these parts, More commonly known as lake trout. Not native to the west. Indeed it is a char. Sometimes in hatcherys they cross breed mackinaw and brookies the result is whats known as a "splake". Why is it called a splake you ask, Because in some parts a brookie is called a speckled trout, So the cross of a "speckled trout and a lake trout is called a splake. It has to be a male brookie and a female lake trout. Mackinaw are a deep water fish rarely caught by fly anglers.

Nice info shaun. FYI same goes for Brown trout and Brook Trout. They produce a trout called a Tiger trout, and fly anglers can fish for them at Topaz lake, and just like the splake trout the tiger trout can no reproduce its just like a mule (aka jacka-s) they can not reproduce as well.

I love that last part shaun, macs are rarely caught by fly anglers. lots of people come into the shop i work at and want to troll for macs and do very well, rarely do i hear of fly guys hooking up with them. its a nice treat to get one on a fly.

Go fish Buck's Lake near Quincy in the spring. Troll a 6/0 Wooley Bugger for 20 lb fish (or a 14'' trout will also do)  biggrin.
