Fished a few hours in the evening on the hottest day of year. Tons of bugs, which was nice to see, and one of those days on Putah when you realize what a great fishery it can be. I hooked into at least 30 fish, with lots of LDRs in fast water, most fish in the 10 to 13 inch range with a couple bigger and several smaller.
Fish were keying on brown mayfly nymphs. At dark I had some reasonable luck with dries and got a nice fat 14 inch bow in a favorite tightline hole.
No one out there at all, so it was very peaceful. I was wet wading, so I wasn't hot. In fact, my cajones still haven't dropped back down from inside my abdomen. Man Putah is cold.
Nice work JL. I was out last week and noticed tons of bugs as well. I hooked and landed just one, chubby little 10". I have trouble finding the fish in these high flows. Man compared to some of the Sierra trout these small Putah rainbows are fat!
Little footballs they are. They have broad shoulders, and once they get up to 12-14 inches, they darken up like crazy. the fish yesterday were launching out of the water like missles.
Pretty sweet.
You're right though, the fish can be hard to find at these flows. I use my float tube (courtesy of otter) to access spots that are hard to get to. That can help too.
