I am finding alternating above (trout) and below (pikeminnow) the dam to be quite enjoyable. In truth, the Pikeminnows are more "fun" at this point because I can get them to hit just about anything I throw at them
I broke in my new fly rod set up; 8'6" St Clair teamed with Abu Garcia Venture 5 reel tonight. Landed 5 of them in about 2 hours and had a blast.
I know thier history and bad rap of being trout/salmon egg/fry anhiliators, but as long as they stay below the dam, I enoy throwing at them!
Next up is Upper Putah for some smallie fly action! Anyone interested?

I live in Hidden Valley Lake which is within a couple of miles of the upper saction of Putah Creek. Haven't fished there in a couple of years. i usually fish it earlier in the year. Depending on when you want to go I might be interested. Mike Borba
I fish lower Putah in Davis all summer long (5 min. form my house) and catch Pikeminnow ALL the time. They are fun, but if you can find a group if juvenile LMB they are even more fun. They will attack wooly buggers recklessly! The Pikeminnow will hit buggers and also sz. 12-16 hares ears on the swing if you can find some moving water or drift them, but the take can be hard to detect.
Hey Vince, the water level right now is very, very low, try under Stevenson's bridge, it's got a nice deep pool but they can be tough to catch there for some reason (alot of bait fishing is my guess).
Sorry for the late reply: They seem to like the semi larger black flies with some aspect of gold in them. Something like below with gold heads:
I had one almost exactly like the one above except it had a gold head and the thing was slammer. It would get hit almost every cast. Of course I managed to snag it and lost it the other week. I've been using Hellgrammite pattern types flies with sucess, but the one above with the gold head was $$ for the pikeminnows.
The crapper thing is I don't even remember where I bought the stupid thing!
