Putah Creek Ticks

We've been up to Putah a couple times this summer and as most of you know, we always bring our dog, Rusty with us. He mostly sits in the car but also I walk him around while Richard is fishing. One of the days he stepped on a nest(?) of ticks-- they were all over him-- and I spent half an hour picking them off and then brought him home and combed more off.......long story short, he now has Lyme Disease and has been very sick. It is so sad to see our brand new, healthy little dog turn into an "old man" in just one month......just an FYI to people who are up there this season or those who bring their dogs up too-- the ticks are THICK and they are the type that carry Lyme-- transmissible to dogs AND humans. BElieve me-- you don't want to get this.disbelief

Sorry to hear about Rusty gettting Lyme's disease. Where were you walking him on Putah when he stepped on the nest o' ticks?

Never heard of such a thing... a nest of ticks. That should have been on fear factor.

Sorry to hear about Rusty hope he gets better. The ticks were realy bad this season with all the rain and and long green grass I can see how a little dog like Rusty got covered.

Obviously now he has it but for the rest of you out there I have recently (last 6 months) switched to using K9 Advantix Plus and i can highly recommend it. ( Check it out online it has Permethrin in it and this stuff seems pretty nasty...but not to dogs etc.)Not to bash Frontline which i used to use but this new version of K9 Advantix (only available form a vet) takes care of heartworm, fleas and ticks. I have had my dog down at putah this season and am yet to find a tick on him!!! (Can't say the same for myself I have found them on an IN my waders, so far none attached though.) I have also heard there is a vaccine available but like most things it is not 100% effective.

Also just to let you know if you are not aware but there is a Rattle Snake bite vaccine available for dogs. it has been available for quite a while but not so many people seem to know about it so here is an FYI  to those of you that do take you dogs fishing and or out and about with you.

As I said hope Rusty gets well and this might help a few fellow dog owners out there.

PS Also as an aside combing is not that effective at removing  ticks. Often you just rip  the ass of the tick of and it stays alive, well and still attached. When removing a tick you must be sure to get the whole thing off including the head which can be quite burried.

I feel really bad for you. I know how it is to lose a dog, although you haven't lost him I'm sure you're still very sad. Is there a cure for Lyme Disease? Thanks for that info Alastair. I'll check that out since my dog loves fishing.

Another thing they are starting to makee DEET free repellants for humans that contain Geranium Extract among other things. I think, so please don't quote me here, permethrin is a geranium extract or derivative??? I believe it is effective on repelling a wide range of bugs including ticks!! Considering the amount of ticks I am finding on me i think i need to make a plan to get some of this "Human Advantix"biggrinbiggrin

There used to be a vaccine for lyme disease but I think they stopped making it. I'm pretty sure it was made by GlaxoSmithKlien ? As for repellent i highly doubt theres anything out there better then deet, especially the 99% stuff. But I question how safe that stuff is to use ?

After talking about his stuff I did a little homework, and found this. http://www.cabelas.com/link-12/product/0076998516902a.shtml?cmCat=perf&rid=0987654321&cm_mmc=Performics-_-CSE-_-GoogleBaseUSA-_-0076998516902a&mr:trackingCode=8DD21BCD-958E-DF11-A0C8-002219318F67&mr:referralID=NA

The review were good and seems like the millitary uses a similar product. Does anyone have experience with this stuff?

Also just checked out the Orvis repellent shirts.....they are treated with permethrin??confuse

If you don't like the deet check out "all terrain" herbal repellant.  Seems to work good enough for me last couple years.  I buy mine at REI.

What a bummer about Rusty you guyz! Very sorry he got the 'coodies'...hope he's feeling better and getting around real soon! Tic's are VILE little critters aren't they.

Definitely been a big year for them. I have a lot of black-tailed deer around my house. I left my car windows open one night and found a half dozen of the little blood suckers on the upholstery. That was a first

I'm pullin' for Rusty!

Man, Putah's getting to be one challenging piece of water; well distributed NZ mud snails, wader shredding blackberry bushes, mountain lions, deer ticks with Lyme's Disease and the occasional belligerent worm drowner with a clinched fist!

All our get-well wishes are with little Rusty, guys.

well, you forgot the poison oak and rattlesnakes...it's sure a pretty little creek, though...well worth the care you folks all give it.

Here's hoping Rusty recovers. I hate it when my 12 year old buddy has a down day. Can't imagine what I'd do if he contracted Lyme's...
