Just a couple more weeks and me and a buddy are heading North to fish the McCloud and Upper Sac for 4 days. I also want to try some of the smaller creeks around Mt Shasta for some fun small fish action, think McCloud Red bands. Conditions should be prime by then.
So Shaun's got company this year? You guys will have an awesome trip for sure. If you go by Mono Lake I suggest hitting Rush Creek, it passes right under 395. I think Shaun has fished it before. You can get some nice sized fish from this little creek.
Yeah, we'll be hitting that. When we went to the owens in November, we stopped and looked at Rush creek... Unfortunatley it was closed to fishing. I've been counting down the days since. Didn't you post a pic of you fishing Rush last year?
Good luck to ya Rich. Those rivers are favorites of mine. I hope the sac. comes down for you, Its still around 1,800 cfs and tends to be one that comes into shape late. MCCloud should be fine. You have to go above lakin dam for a true McCloud redband trout. Are you fishing above or below mCCloud Lake ? Nature consevatory or whatever its called ? Bueatiful area. Where you staying ? A stop at Ted Fayes is a must. Yeah, I found someone willing to come along, Lets just hope whippersnapper can hang for 10 days of hard fishin and tent campin.
Since your headed to the upper sac / mcloud area, you should hit up the Hat, the creek is always a good time. Hat should be in good shape when your up there.
Dr. Bombay . . . many, many bushes along the Owens to snooze in during the post-Bombay haze. I hear it's more comfortable that the Truckee, many more nests along the river for you to choose from.

I fished the Pit a couple of weeks ago. The flows were a little higher than normal but fishable. Got into a few nice ones on Pit three reach. The access is a little different because you can't drive over Lake Britton dam but you can take the back way. Also fished Burney Creek above the falls. Absolutely beautiful. Didn't see one other soul on the Pit.
Not for thre entire trip. You'll only lose Shawn for a few hours at a time when he tucks down into a bush for a powernap. Perhaps a little longer after he knocks down most of a pint of Bombay Saphire the night prior. You'll see him for most of thr trip.

I'll be bringing in trout like there going out of style ! There will be time for sleeping hangovers off in the bushes. Although if I had to rate the best rivers to sleep off hangovers on, The owens would be right up there. Mosquito's though, Brutal. There like Brian on a bar slut.
Hey packrat, I highly suggest fishing the lower section of the upper sac. I have a few secret spots, even though its right off I5, that are the best big fish dry fly section you will find. They are bad ars, and very easy to get to, but thats as much as I will put out on the forum. If you want more let me know we can talk or pm the rest. Cool thing about it is you can do this trip in only a day, but best for an overnighter.

With the high flows on the upper sac. the last thing i'd do is work the lower river. theres so many seasonal small streams and tribs. that come into the river that the lower you go the higher and potentially off color the water will be. High flows, I'd look at cantera loop and upriver.
Dr. a good word of caution when in the Owens valley . . . during the mid-day heat, rattlesnakes will seek cover from the heat, i.e. bushes, rocks etc. Please be sure to choose your napping bush with extreme caution in order to avoid any catastrophic encounters which could cut your trip short.
I am not talking about fishing it right now, he will be fishng it in a few weeks, right now the upper sac is around 1900 cfs, and dropping fast, by the time he gets up there the upper sac will be in perfect play, and the section I would show him has several feeder streams around in that area.

We will fish the Nature Conservancy one day then fish the headwaters another. Not going until July 15th so everything should be in good shape by then. We are staying at a hotel right in the town of McCloud.

Whipper's bringing his own tent right......
You guys will have a blast.
Yeah, I'm bringing my own tent... I'm sure Shaun's gonna bring some chili... I'm not making that mistake again.
Rich, I thought you were going sooner. probably be good to go by then. And hell yes I'm bringing my own tent, I ain't shackin up with no dude for 10 nights in a small tent. Chili isn't so bad, But one should be caustious of the dehydrated chili mac !

That's part of the reason I started the night sleeping outside on the East Carson. I think that Chili mac is contagious, cuz I didn't eat any, but by the end of the night I was ripping them worse than you.
man the days of MRE's. some where good, some where horribly bad and those ones you would feel for days. so i guess you could say that i miss them to miss them. on a good note for mre's, if you get the good ones they are great for back packing trips.

MRE's were good the first few times I had to eat them but after awhile they get pretty disgusting. I once ate them on average twice a day for 45 days in the desert up near yakima wa. I've been told they've come along way in the last few years.
well dont know about the last few yrs but i know they were not that bad from 99-03. I must just have to try one out to see how they r now. They were definitely something you didt want to eat for many days straight.
