The lure of the Lower Yuba got me again. I made an early morning decision to head up to the Lower Yuba on Friday. The flows were over 2300, Deer Creek was at 119 CFS, meaing the Lower Yuba was probably muddy. There was a chance of rain. I decided the hell with it, I had to run up. Worst that could happen was I drive back an hour and hit Putah. So, like Cole said, sometimes just head out and do it no matter what. Out the door at 5:15 AM and off I went.
I got up to the HWY 20 bridge fueled with plenty of coffee and was most surprised to see the river had a slight green tint to it, but was not muddy at all. Man, I was estatic. On my first 4 drifts, I landed 3 fish by the bridge. Next spot, I land 7 more and lost a couple. It's not even 10 AM yet, what's going on here??!!! I decided to go for it and cross the river at 2300 CFS, not the smartest decision I have made in my life. I did make it across, but one slip, and I would have been taking a cab back to the bridge from Marysville. AAAhhhhh, a personal record, crossing the Yuba at 2300 CFS. I don't know if I'll try that one again. My legs are still feeling it.
A decent rise started and I switched to a March Brown dry and landed 3 more. Lost a monster right afterwards. Why does it always seem like the biggest fish of the day gets off? I had him played for about a minute and then he broke me off of 3X. I thought I could horse him in on 3X, but sadly, he proved me wrong.
I got downriver a bit, and no one was fishing that side, and landed 3 more nice fish. I have never, ever in all my fishing,  had a day like this on the Yuba, and hope it won't be my last. Lots of good fish, nothing under 14" and as big as 20".
I have never fished the river this high. The fish were certainly holding in different places, but everywhere they should in these conditions. Any slack water or seams held fish, and they were going after food aggresively. They must have been taking a day off from their normal ultra selectivity. I will give up one of the bugs, a red Copper John, size 14 with a black hackle on it did very well. I tried to go bright in the tinged water and it seemed to work.  Â
I just realized one of the great things of this board . . . when no one in the house wants to hear your fish tales any longer, you have a whole media to throw it out on!!!!! Here's a couple of flicks
Wow those are some nice looking fish. I guess I need to get up there, it would be a first for me. You also gave up the orange glow bug in that last picture. Thanks for the report. It is nice to hear about a great day of fishing, that sounds like a Yuba Bonanza.

got to love the yellow or orange sucker spawn this time of year.......and the crawdad hatch (thus the success with the copper john). Â Try a size 20 red copper john at the seams of the tail end of riffles. This month and next month the crawdads start carying around baby crawdads by the hundreds underneath their tails. Â Generally between zize 20-22 at the beggining/middles of march, and about 16-18 by the end of march. Â Seems like the larger one had some success today for ya Bob.Looks like a great day Bob! Â Now if I could just get off of these cructhes.....Been way to long.
Were you getting the fish with the march brown with emergers or with a soft hackle?

Drifter- I have been fishing the wonderful Yuba and surrounding waters since you were in diapers. Although I find your enthusiasm encouraging I have to disagree with this suggestion. I don't like to make waves but I have followed these forums for a long time (under a different name) and quite frankly am sick of your poor grammar and vastly incorrect suggestions.

Personally, I look for any info and a good chuckle on the board, I mean, let's put it in perspective here. When I begin correcting grammar on the board, somebody please drive down and hit me over the head with an idiot stick.
I'll bring the idiot stick tomorrow and knock you over the head with it in advance ..OK !?!

ya and alastair you dont need a space then 2 periods, just one will serfice. drifter IMHO is not in the webster dictionary, you might want to do a spell check before you post.

Brian, Daniel Webster does not recognize "ya" as an ENglish word. Secondly, you've offended Alistair by mispelling his name and I know these South Africans' can be very sensitive. A formal written apology is recomended in The Etiquette Book.
Alistair, don't bring that stick tommorrow, we get together on 3/21. You can save your wacks for then.
actually the only one thats handing out apologies is the man that needs to get hit with the stick. do me a favory alastair hit bob with it for me for this one. lol
ya is in this online dictionary http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ya as well as this one http://www.websters-online-dictionary.org/definition/ya and this one http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ya
and if you click on africanangler his name is spelled just that way i spelled it.

When Webster was alive, the internet did not exist. The online version of his dictionary therefor must be misinterpreted from the original version . . . it is the only plausable explanation.
Secondly, my Dad was a New Zealander, and his middle name was Alistair. Somewhere along the long, apparently the South Africans have reinterpreted correct spelling of the name and invented their new version of it. Any questions?
Bob now I am definitely bring the stick along now, or at least I am going to kick you in......you know us South Africans don't like our names misspelled!!!

Man, this thread has gotten much better after the earlier "off topic" intrusion of our anonymous poster. Though, Bob's original post started off great. Good to see peace and harmony has returned once again.
Heading to the Lower Yuba tomorrow. Alistair or Alastair (sp?) and Brian, come out a day early. If not, I'll leave a fish or two for you guys.
PCT hit the river yesterday on the UCD property. Lots of fish caught with a number of them falling to Copper Johns. JL had one estimated at 26" (he has pictures) MX19 and Otter were tearing them up; Alastair, I don't know-he was pretty quiet. We'll be doing it again in early June. If interested, join PCT (UCD requires members only allowed).Â
Ha ha Sorry guys I couldn't shut up but I am not used to catching more than one fish on a day.... Anyway it was a awesome day out and as always fun to get out on the water with PCT friends.
Steve and Steve thanks for all the hard work on putting on such a fun day!!
