Hit the Yuba today with 3 buddies. We went down stream instead of fighting the crowds above the bridge. We got the the Bridge around 8:00 and I pulled into the North side just to see how many cars were there, surprisingly only 4. Crossed the bridge and headed down about a mile. Started with skwala stone nymphs and a go to pattern I got an early morning tip on. Nothing worked. I decided to go small and see what happens. Put on a size 16 S&M nymph and bingo fish on! Nice fat 15 incher. 2 other fish were caught by the group on prince nymphs. Headed back up to the bridge in the afternoon and fished the chute from the South side. 3 fish landed all around 16-18 inches and several more hooked but not landed. Fish were busting the surface for about an hour non stop and were taking mayflies subsurface as they emerged. I switched my dropper fly to a small soft hackle hares ear and ditched the indicator. I wasn't paying close attention and I got a bite so hard the rod literally was almost yanked out of my hands, to late for a hook set. Did hook up on a couple more nice fish in the chute but not landed, all on the soft hackle as far as I could tell. In all it was a good day for my. 2 of the group got the Yuba skunk, I ended up with 5 to hand and about 5 that were hooked but came unbuttoned and the last guy had 2 trout to hand and about a 5 pound sucker that fought like a champ. As Bob mentioned in his report, saw skwalas hatching but not too many and fish are not keying on them . Very few PMDs and some other dark brown mayflies on the air. Not a bad outing.
