good luck trying to pry putah creek tips from people on this site, try lookin thru all the old topics and posts and deduct info from thos. putah creek is very jacked up right now and has been for awhile, the fish you see right now are all spawners so i wouldnt even bother fishing putah right now, unless of course you just need a nice little place to smoke haha putah creek isnt what it once was and thats a shame, good luck

Here's a good tip. Wet your line. Fish every run you see and maybe you'll catch a couple. Make sure you go small.

Alot of people get turned off to flyfishing around here because they start on one of the most diffucult waters in nor. cal. Putah creek. If you want to gain tons of experience and confidence your going to have to wait for the sierra season approx. june to oct. is prime fishing. Pick any river system and head up rivers like the upper forks of the yuba, american, or stanislaus are all good starting points. All it takes is free time and lots of driving. So for now we just have to pound away on those finicky tailwater fish with indicators and big long strings of weight, A technique that I often question wether it is even actually "flyfishin". Good luck on your new endevor but be warned flyfishing has been known to take over ones life in a strange way.

Find the food and you will probably find the fish. When reading the water try to think where the "chow line" is, that's where you should concentrate your effort. Learn as much as you can about bugs, especially how the different types of bugs BEHAVE in their various nymph stages, your drift is supposed to match the behavior of what the bugs are doing at the exact time that you are standing knee deep in the river, if it doesn't you won't catch fish. In other words, don't focus on catching fish, focus on identifying and imitating bugs where there are fish and you WILL catch fish eventually.

Conditions change continuously throughout the day and bug activity changes with them, so you have to always keep your eye open and change your tactics. If you haven't done so already buy one of these http://www.anglingdesigns.com/intro.asp and use it. Any time you are NOT catching fish you should be dipping this thing in the water to see what is going on under the surface where the fish are getting 98% of their food. Hold off on buying a lot of flies until you dip this net a dozen or so times in different places, the flies you buy should look like the bugs you find. Use the net every time you go fishing and you will catch more fish, it is far more productive than walking into a shop and asking "what are they hitting". Look real hard in that net too, imitating that 5mm long skinny greenish thing that looks like a wiggling booger is likely what the fish are keyed on.

Speaking of little greenish things, in Putah you'll find that midges are a key food item. These are like bacon bits for trout, they have a great nutrition profile but hardly any calories so the trout have to eat bazillions of them to make a living out of it. That's the good new, the bad news is they won't move very far for them so your fly has to drift perfectly right by their nose, so change your configuration frequently (amt of weight, w and without indicator, etc. to get at different depths). Big fish hit tiny flies in Putah.

This hardly scratches the surface, but is stuff I've found to be important. Finally, don't worry about the latin names for anything, the fish don't know them either. They just know those wiggly green snotty things are a tasty treat if one drifts by close enough.

Windnots is giving you great advice. I like you had a hard time knowing what to do to find fish and get them to bite. It is a life long challange, and if someone tells you they have it mastered they must be fishing in the trout farm pond. The best thing that I ever did to help was to hire a guide that gave a stream side class. The first few hours were learning how to select your fly. This was done by loking at the rocks in the stream and around the stream. If you see it they are probably eating it. The next lesson was using the dip net which was two wood dowels with about 18" of window screen. put that down in the water and see what it catches. A good trick is to empty the contents of the screen onto a white paper plate and it realy helps you see what is there. Take your time looking at what you have collected and rember where you collected it, eg top of the water, middle or on the bottom. Dont be afraid to pick up rock and look under them also. If you do this you will know what is on the menu now match size and color and fish them at the level that you collected them and your on your way. Also do a search on stream fishing and you should be able to find diagrams that show the most popular spots of a stream that hold fish. Your library should have lots of books and videos.

And yes it is true putah is tough. It gets pounded by the best. I was talking to a Friend that travels the world chasing world records and after fishing putah many times he ranked putah at a level of PHD. ( lots of schooling)
 Good luck.

Putah Creek Trout sponsored stream side workshops led by Bono and MX19 last year. If there is sufficient interest, we might be able to convince them to repeat it again this year. A donation to PCT is the only cost. You will learn setups, how to approach and  read the water, and be shown some areas that usually hold fish. If interested, post below, and we'll see what happens.

Best thing to do is get a guide with proper paperwork for a half day or full day
And all the other guys stop guiding without paperwork !! your removing food off Bono's table MOSES

Not everyone can afford to drop that kind of money on a day out, so a PCT benefit day is a great way to get some guys involved in PCT and raise some funds. I know it was these workshops that got me involved with PCT last year. If I was good enough I would gladly assist but I am still firmly in the category of needing assistance.biggrinbiggrin

hiring guides is a super waste of money, unless ur old and dont have much time left haha, theres a whole world of tips and tricks on the internet, thats how i learned, i even learned to tie my own flies from the FREE internet, you dont have to spend much money if you take the time to learn and study aquatic insects and their patterns if you do have the money and want to hire a guide then hire one up in the sierras where the fishing is promising. putah creek is declining rapidly each year and soon wont even be worth fishing unless sum1 cleans up the creek and closes it for a couple years, if you want to do sum REAL fly fishing then hit the sierras in the spring and summer months, google earth is the perfect place to find a creek or stream too and the top water fishing is amazing

but if you want to learn fast and have money to burn then ive heard nothin but great things about bono, but as for myself the only thing i will pay for is fly tying materials and my license, fishing doesnt have to be expensive if you have the will to do things on your own

one more thing, you can learn most everything you need to know about putah if you read all these topics and research them carefully. pick them apart with a fine tooth hackle comb , ive been flyfishing about 10 years off n on(fishing putah for 30 years) but really went full boar fly fishing only the last few years, its the most artistic and rewarding sport in the world as far as im concerned, and i think its THE sweetest science in the world. im addicted and the addiction isa festering monster. ive just got my 1st fly tying kit on xmas and i can already say i will never buy another fly again(thanks youtube: how to tie fly videos) haha, but anyway theres thousands of miles of creeks up in nor-cal and the sierras and they are all mostly holdin, good luck to ya

Here are some tips:
- learn to roll cast.  Sometimes roll casting is the only option.
- regarding flies, go to your local fly shop.  Sweeney's Sports (Napa) color codes their fly bins for Putah Creek flies.  Creative Sports (Pleasant Hill) sells "Putah Creek" fly boxes.  Usually there is someone at the shop that is familiar with the stream.
- watch other anglers you see on the stream (but don't intrude on their fishing space).  Look at where they are casting, how they are casting, how long a tippet they are using and if and how they are mending.
- regarding where to fish, look for a combination of depth and current speed.  The water has to be deep enough for the fish to feel comfortable and the current must be slow enough where you can get a natural drift.  If your drift is too fast, try mending your line.  Also, the main current is usually the fastest; if it's too fast, fish the seams on the edges of the flow.  In general, the larger the fishable area, the better the potential for more and bigger fish.
- fish as much as you can.  The creek can be stingy in yielding its secrets, but it will eventually if you put in the time and effort.

well, hopefully that said rookie will see where i said "ive heard nothing but great things about bono" and hire him if thats what the rookie wants to do, i apologize to bono for the above statements. I have found it more rewarding to figuring out and studying fly techniques on my own but to each his own. If you dont have much time to learn the fine art of fly fishing on putah creek then DEFINATELY hire bono and definately study insect patterns

its not a waste of money to hire a guide if you cant figure out fly fishing on your own, i was just trying to say that as far as im concerned its alot more fun and more interesting learning on ur own and over time instead of being spoon fed info in just a half or full day guide trip, its more rewarding to figure it out on ur own, i dont know bono but from what i read over the last few years he seems to be a good dude and definately knows what he's talkin about. but what i like the most is that he doesnt have this overwhelming ego like 80% of the people on this site, its why u rarely see me post in here, too much bitchin and moanin or im better then you are BS...its only fishing people and i fish to get away from people like that...i will only apologize to bono and i didnt mean any disrespect

Underdog, I definitely have no ego... I just give crap to the ones with the overwhelming ego. I just love being out there. Let's put it this way. Me and Shaun drove a round trip of over 1,000 miles to fish for 1 and a half days... Although it was supposed to be a 4 day trip. We still had fun, and I don't regret nothing even though the fishing was sub par for the most part.

By the way, many people that hire guides don't know how to fish at all. It's a lot easier for us former spin fishermen to pick up a fly rod and learn on our own compared to the ones that are just picking up a rod for the first time.

No hard feelings though Underdog.

Ok this crap is gettin really old guys, there are a few of you on this board that do this, so know i am going to say what is on my mind, as well as others on this board.

There is a PM system set in place for a reason. Its not there for its good looks. Maybe you wanna ask someone to go fishing, or hey whats the go to flys on this river, or where should i go on this river, or other fishing questions, OR maybe someone rubbed u the wrong way on there post and now u have to get it out. If this is the case then this is when u PM them, not on the board for everyone else to read. So if you are going to citicize someone or someones post or what someone wrote, first off, really read what they wrote first, u could be taking it wrong, if thats not the case then PM them saying hey what u did was wrong u should try saying it or doing it this way next time, or what ever your heart so desires, the PM system is where u do it. The few of u that do this are coming off like a bunch of whinny lil babies that just lost their pacifier, and most of the time completely ruining someones post. if u got a promblem, PM them. Not only do u make yourself look bad (which u probably dont care) but you are making a negotive impact on this website. keith and gregg have work way to hard for people to just come on this board and put their 2 cents in when its not needed. the way someone types something is always on how they meant it. but the way u read it maybe completely different in how they ment it. in this case what should u do. PM THEM!!!!!
