Fishing isnt about catching fish, its not about who caught the most, or who caught the biggest, its about the experience that you have on the water, and the life long bonds you make with others on the journey to becoming a better person inside.
Timmosazz, what was the condition of the lake water? The reason I ask is that the feeder streams ususally clear up in less than a week. However, when the lake is murky, it can take several weeks for the lake (and the creek) to clear up.
was hard to tell the color with the sheets of rain and hail goiing on but I can tell you that the water coming out of the dam was clear with a green tint. and that was all the way down to clear creek,

Usually with the amount of rain we've been recieving the upper or northern end of the lake starts becoming murky with the help of upper Putah and Pope creeks. That slug of water gradually makes its way to the lower end of the lake (dam) and then thats when the creek gets some color and pretty much stays that way for awhile. But fear not...I have had some great days of fishing with low visibility on Putah, can you say size 12 chartreuse glow bug, or maybe a san juan worm!!!Bono
bono is right on the money, i love putah when its murky, i have had some great days in the past with viz of 1 to 2 ft on putah. they love big flys when this happens. and u can get away with bigger tippet. its about that time too. oh ya and no one else is fishing it. lol

Murky water can also provide cover for the fish. I can't say that I'm a fan of murky water, but one thing I have discovered is that fish will sometimes hold in much shallower water than normal when the water is murky. One of my favorite spots would typically hold fish with flows down to about 150 CFS; below this the water gets too shallow and clear. However, a couple of years ago during murky water conditions, I was able to pull several good fish out of this spot with flows as low as 65 CFS.
I am planning on heading out this week. Is it still murky? I'll probably head out anyway so I'll post a report.
I am new here, but have been fly fishing for a decade. Started out once or twice a year and have steadily increased the addiction. I usually go to the Sierra or Northern Cal.
I went to Putah the first time in Jan. this year with my girlfriend. We found the place beautiful. Got to see some spawning fish and even some risers in the slicks on our way back to the car. we fished a little - very carefully avoiding any redds or spawning fish and got skunked - but had a great time.
I and my gal would be interested in the class mentioned in the other posts. I will go post to that effect now.
just looked at the creek today and it was absolutely jacked up with chocolate milk. dont think it will change much by tomorrow but good luck none the less

Thanks underdog. I'll probably head Wed. or Thur. then I'll take some photos and post. If it is ovaltine-like I might not even wet my line or my waders/gear.
i fished it last weds for a few hours, viz was crappy maybe a foot. did see one fish and that was it.

Last saturday is was total mud from just below the dam all the way to solano lake with no visibility. Ground is so saturated any real amount of rain is going to blowout cold creek and thompson canyon creek, Thats were all the mud is coming from. Good news is lake berryessa is pretty clear with just a bit of a green tint. I doubt the glory hole will spill over the lake level isn't even touching the cement yet.
i did notice a lot of built up grass in many dry areas, guessing that 900cfs push they put through putah helped out a lil bit. but we need more than 900 to clean it out.
