Where to go

I am into fly fishing for only a couple of years now, I've done quite a bit of fishing on the east coast. While reading through the posts about staying away from the redds several members mentioned that there are plenty of other places to fish around here. I would love to hear about them, I know of Putah and then the Lower Stanislaus (was there last week, HEAVY pressure, no fish). Are there any smaller streams where you can throw around some dries? I say thanks in advance for any tips

Small streams this time of year are tough due to wether and cold water. Wait until Spring then head to the mountains. If you go towards Yosemite the possibilities are endless as there is water everywhere you look. Get a good map of the area and get out and explore. Lot's of dry fly action.

Another good option is the American River drainage. Again, get a map of the area and there is a lot of water in the foothills to check out. Some of it can be a challenging hike to get to but worth it.

KW, im gonna expand on what Packrat said. Get a map of the sierras. close your eyes and start poking the map until you hit a river/creek. Then go fish that river or creek. Your almost guaranteed to find some action on dries, especially during the spring and summer time. As far as flies go.

Dries:
12-18 Adams
12-18 Yelllow/Red, Humpy
12-18 Stimulators
12-18 Elk Hair Caddis

if your unsure what to put on, stick with cadis.

If you prefer a book, check out Fly Fishing the Sierra Nevada by Bill Sunderland.

Not alot of small stream action available right now. But come spring and this summer theres plenty of options. Just get a map find some blue line in the sierras and go fish it. You might be able to hit some real early before runoff but otherwise I start heading up regalurly about mid to late june, All depends on runoff.

The other good book on Sierra trout fly fishing is by Ralph Cutter.  The title is

Sierra Trout Guide

The definitive work on California's trout fisheries and how to fish them.

Ralph and Lisa's website is: http://www.flyline.com/ and it has a lot of information also on fly selection, entomology, etc.

BTW, I was on Putah this morning for 3 hrs and there was no action whatsoever.

cant beat the sierras in the summer time for all around fish catching experience. i know u said fishing with drys but there is some great fishing within an hour or so of sac with using nymphs especially this time of yr, yuba, american, mok, truckee, little truckee, calveras, these rivers are good with drys too, but even better with nymphs for this time of yr. if u have a float tube or pontoon or even a row boat, dfg plants a lot of the lakes and ponds in the greater sacramento area, u can do really well with woolly buggers.
