12/26 Yuba Run

Dr. Bombay, Packrat and myself made another impromptu dash up to the Yuba on Saturday.  We chased the last of the rain on the way up. It was overcast and misty in the morning . . . perfect conditions.  The river was even lower than 10 days ago if you can believe that.  The rain did not put any color into the river, it was very clear.

We began nymphing with the usual Yuba stuff without any action.  Some fish began rising and we went to dries.  I tossed a BWO dry.  Again, no action.  A lot of the rises were these large fish rocketing 2-3 feet out of the water.  Fun to see this.  Finally some action in the afternoon, using small, small bugs that I would not normally use on the Yuba.  The Skwala nymph that had produced in the past was seeing no action today ( sorry Brian, sadly the SJ Worm was not the ticket!!!!).  I still can't get over how these 14" Yuba fish will take out line on a 5 weight!!!!  It was a lot of work and walking for a little bit of reward. I got into a huge fish and played him for a minute or so. As I'm getting up to the bank to move downstream and land him, I slip on a rock, do an Arthur Murray dance number, put a little slack in the line . . . and off he goes . . . DAMN!!!!  He was a monster.  Another one of the best made fish stories to put in the book.

After a long day of much hiking, we retired to Burgers and Brew to nurse our hunger and quench our thirst.  Dr. Bombay and Packrat got to listen to me moan about losing this fish for another 45 minutes, but were able to hide behind a full mug of beer.  Their non interest was thankfully masked by the cool amber liquid in the mug. The magnetic lure of the Yuba will be tugging again soon!!!!  Again, good times guys, always good laughs.

I must have walked past you guys at some point. I worked the nymphs hard and didn't get anything on them, I did find a few stoneflies/skwalas in the dip net though, about a size 10 and brownish in color. they just didn't produce. I switched too late to the BWO's but still managed to pick one up before the day was over

Always a good time guys. Tough fishing but its good to have a rod in your hands anytime. I got stuck for awhile chasing risers in flat water. Always a tough game but enjoy it.

We were fishing above the bridge and worked our way up the UC Property.  We fished mostly on the south side of the river all day.  We spent a lot of time on the upper portions of the river.
