Just wanted to hear peoples predictions on how they think putah will be fishing in the coming years since we have the new regs? Will we see a dramatic improvement in the fishing or is it going to be a slow process? Will there be more or less fisherman fishing putah now? Will putah ever be planted again? And if they do would it only be from putah creek brood stock? Just wanted to hear thoughts about what you think the future holds for putah now?
My personal view: Steady improvement, year to year, IF poaching and illegal types of fishing are controlled, and the creek experiences a scouring by a high flow this winter to clean out sediment and the weed growth. IMO, the biggest issue will be illegal take and keeping fish. This coming year the majority of caught fish will still be small (based on the November electrofishing result).
If the Creek is managed as a trophy water, planting of any kind will be carefully evaluated before resuming (if it resumes)..
Here's the deal: DFG does not have the resources to protect and help nurture the fishery. That is going to be primarily up to us that fish or otherwise use the Creek for recreation. We have to manage the resource; we have to work for the reward.
When they did the electroshocking studies did they figure out trout per mile on putah. Or is it to difficult to guage because the fish move in and out of the lake. It would be nice to have some sort of an idea of how many trout per mile are in the creek now and compare it in 5 years times to see what impact these reg changes are making.
This was not a survey where fish per mile determinations would have any meaning. It was designed to see the size and age distribution. Later surveys will address an accurate population number estimate.
