11/1 Putah report

I decide to hit Putah today, giving myself only a 1 hour drive for some fishing.  I think this was the first time ! fished Putah in 11 months????  It was like seeing an old friend again.   There were only 4 other cars parked along the road, I'm curious if this is because the egg bite is happening on other rivers or if this is the result of a slow fishing year.  I was able to get into a decent number of smaller fish.  I'd say the largest was about 9 inches.  Nothing of size to report.  My best results were on dries, Parachute Adams from size 16 to 20.  I had quite a few takes and fish landed on these.  Nymphing produced with standard Putah patterns, but not as much.

I had my opportunity to see the new "campground" down at access #4 for the first time.  I had to laugh heartily when I see it.  At first, I thought it might be a pumpkin patch or a pigpen.  I love the chicken wire around it . . . what a laugh!!!  A real intimate roadside camping experience.  As if that wasn't enough, you get the P.O.W. experience with the wire fence around you.  I was looking to see if John Rambo might be walking the river????

This coming Wednesday is the last public comment period before the Fish and Game Commission for the proposed regulations change.  Come December or January, we should have an idea on what's happening with this.  Let's hope that Putah fishing is heading back in the right direction.

I made it out in the afternoon on saterday, I had pretty much the same experience. Lots of small fish, some on dries but mostly nymphing. Only saw one other on the creek.

I went out on saturday and tied up a few halloween midges, orange body black head. I caught this ghoulish fish.  Must be some of my otter cousin's getting hungry.   It jumped three times and was very healthy!! Fished Sean's hole and it was very productive.

I went to the Yuba today; I think those floating zombie salmon from Halloween screwed up the fishing. Not a single bite. At first I thought it was my fly, then the location, then the depth, then the weight, then I switched to dries on the 4wt, then I switched to emergers on the 4wt, then I thought well, maybe a swung soft hackle caddis. Not a thing. Nothing on Sarah and Richard's rod either. Everyone we talked to said it was dead; as we were getting ready to leave, we ran into two pontoon fishers, who also hooked nothing but salmon.

Lesson learned? Shoulda' went to Putah.

Hey Otter, never seen that before. To me that doesn't look like a wound from an attack, that looks more like some kind of infection, especially given the location. If it were another critter chomping on it you would see some kind of crescent shaped wound.

Packrat and DrBombay:

It's good to hear that. I was getting spoiled on Putah I think. It was humbling to finally get skunked.
