Bear Grylls bit my fish!

Fished a few weeks back and just remembered about this photo I took. Here's what happened...

I started my 11 o'clock morning wading up along the uneven granite banks of the river that will be unnamed. My game plan was to explore and fish new water before reaching the "Glory Hole." Trekking through endless thorns and slippery rock, the detour was worth it. I arrived to "the spot" right on schedule with a couple of hours of light left and I was already pushing a 30 fish day ( I don't know how many but it was good...) After poking a few more, I hooked a real fighter. Her take was more deliberate than any other fish and she took off faster than the current. Through the water I could see my pale green line bow to the shape of a C against the friction of the water. 50 Feet later, she broke the surface. After revealing herself a few more times, I noticed a rather large red shape on her back. Regaining line, I could see this rose colored imperfection beneath the water's surface making its way closer to me. My original thoughts were that I snagged a peddle of a flower that "zip lined" its way to the back of the fish. To my surprise it was a hole in the fish too large and to fresh for any fish to fight that hard. Despite the inevitable, I still released her in hopes that the wound would some how heal. Hopefully Wonda didn't suffer no

Thinking back on that fish, it was probably bitten by an otter in mid fight... that would explain the sudden surge of line take.

By Otter? Good think I didn't hook any fish back when he, Alastair, and I were on the Yuba.

That bite mark goes right through her spine- I bet the otter made a quick feast out of her when she was released.

Hey Johnny, I know where you were. Only because you told me. That story and pic deserves a place on the LFFO FaceBook site.

Bear Grylls? Maybe Les Stroud? Waiting for our very own "Otter" to respond.

Bear Grylls would only do something like that if he had a nice hotel room to sleep in after (http://www.reuters.com/article/televisionNews/idUSN2439321520070724). disbelief

Les Stroud is way more bad ass. And he's proven that a fly rod is lifesaver, and not just as extremely expensive firewood.

Art- It would bean honor to have this story on the facebook! Let me know if you need anything else.

It is true.. Bear Grylls is a phony. However, they don't put a stunt double in to jump out of a plane, jump off a cliff, swim in freezing water and do naked jumping jacks, and bite living FISH! Although Les is hands down the most savvy "survivor man" on TV, Bear does some extreme stuff... No to saying that biting a live fish takes a lot of survival training but it's still pretty cool too see and all I see Les do is eat dandelions and berries. Even though Bear sleeps in a hotel sometimes and eats a lobster dinner in between shoots, he still makes exciting television. Then again I gotta hand it to Les for breaking out a stick on TV. In all I'm still sticking to Bear biting my fish

Come on guys I don't eat trout anymore. I landed a fin clipper steelie this weekend and I was seriously contemplating putting him on the bbq. I decided it was best to let it go. Good thing Emerger brought steaks and brats for dinner, they were much better!!! Some great fishing with Ryan Johnston this past week on the egg bite. He put us on a float where we were pretty much the only boat fishing for steelies and big trout. I call it cadillac fishing, you just sit back and catch big fish all day long. If you get a chance book a trip with Ryan it is super fun. Fishing in a drift boat is completely different from wading, it reminds me of kicking upstream in a float tube to get into the fish. Go to rjsflytrips.com if you want to have a great day.

Yep, Ryan is a great guide. I highly recommend him. Here are a couple of shots from our float.

Nice fish there Cliff. What is that 19" on the RJ scale? The best part of the trip was the "Super secret" river we fished.

I have that same hat Cliff, and if I believed in luck, I'd say it had a role in some good days on the river smile.gif

Those are some excellent fish!
