I'm a lifelong flyer from Los Angeles who just moved here a few months ago. I've spent a few days up at Putah and have enjoyed myself thoroughly. Nailed a few up at the Yuba River last month as well, actually.
I'm looking to spend some time up into the Sierras. I've been forum lurking a bit, and I've read in a couple of threads some people suggesting to newer fly-fishermen(and women) that they try some easier water up in the Sierras to build their confidence. I've been searching, but I can't seem to find any information about where any of these fabled waterways are.
They don't have to be easily accesible; I'm always up for a rough-and-tumble with some brush. If anyone can suggest some waterways say, within two hours' drive of Vacaville in any direction that would provide some nice fishing and great scenery, I'd be very much obliged! Looking forward to chatting with you all!
within 2 hours, east carson, west carson, south fork american, silver fork american, caples creek, yuba, american, like vince said north fork yuba, but thats best in the summer time with drys, but this time of year u can get into some really nice brownies, if u have a pontoon and want to drive another 45 mins, lower sac. just to name a few.
but dont limit your self to those rivers this time of yr, many many rivers fish really well this time of yr with big browns, test your skills, get out on some of those river. east walker, little truckee, big truckee, putah creek some browns but big rainbows, mccloud (really really big browns come up from the lake) trinity river and its tributaries.
i am always up from bringin a new guy out (ask alastair and jvento) and gettin them on some new water as well as some nice fish and giving them pointers through out the day to help improve their skills. just shoot me a pm and we can go from there. i fish pretty much everyother day, but i stay away from the weekends. so pretty much monday, wednesday and friday for the most part.

There is lots of fishy waters not far from you at all. The Sierra foothills out of Foresthill has lots of water to fish, Middle Fork American, North Form American, Rubicon and several other small creeks that all hold fish. Get a map of the area and explore, it can be really fun out there.
wow cant believe i forgot all about the other forks of the american, ya ill be fishing those this yr. but watch out on the middle fork lots of miners with claims, they get pretty testy sometimes. and the flows. in the am there are 250-300 by mid day up to 1000cfs for the rafters, just keep an eye out cuz it will creep up fast on you, but if u want brownies and close to home the middle fork is the way to go. only 30 mins to great brownie water.

My vote for an easy water is the NF Yuiba hands down. You can make a weekend out of it and stay at a hotel in either Downieville or Sierra City. Either one is a very pretty gold rush town with good dining options as well. Staying at a hotel in either town puts you literally on the river. Two nice fishing lodges are just outside Downieville, The Lure and the Sierra Shangri La.
The NF Yuba gets my vote as most scenic river in the area as well. It is just beautiful up there, especially with the fall colors. You'll get into many rainbows and browns on the river. They have a good Octber Caddis hatch going on right now, so you can fish big dries to good sized fish, though typically you get a lot of small fish out of this river. It can be really fast action here.
I agree with Oneweight on that one. I spent the weekend in Sierra City and fished the N Yuba for a few hours Sat. and Sun. Nymphing produced best for me and it is gorgeous up there right now.
