Okay, I promised Brian I would post a pic from the latest "pig fest" from the Carson. A big hen on a #14 olive sparkle dun. It's been an epic three weeks guys.
freezing in the am, i needed thermal bottoms and tops, a beenie and gloves, by 10 i took it all off, wanted to wet wade but something told me know, good thing cuz by 12 a 10 or so mph wind kicked up and made it kinda chilly, i still ended up gettin a sun burn which was nice.
me and my buddy pounded the water above hangmans as well as below all the way to the guide wire. we both did well. i got several 10-16"s above hangmans and several pigs below including 3 brownies from 16-20. the 20"er didnt really like takin pics as i flashed her she decided to say good by. but i do have a few pics ill add later in the day today or tomorrow. even a nice pic of a fresh redd made by some very large brownies. it was a beautiful site to see considering the flows.
wish we had pounded it together. but hey it was a blast either way.

Jeremiah Johnson with a 3wt is what it'll be. Really, Dr. B's right. This coming week is supposed to be brutal as the first real winter storm is going to hit the ranges north. And, all of us in the Bay area too. The Chronicle said, go get "flashlights and fresh batteries".
Now, for Steelhead... that's a different story. Bring on the rain.
i am fishing ever other day now, some times 3 days in a row, normalyl 3-4 days a week, thats what happens when u are not working and on unemployment, told the car place to F off. was there for 4 yrs and they didnt see eye to eye with some things that i was hoping to recieve so they dont deserve me. anyways i have the chp thing happening right now, and so far so good, passed my post written now on the 17th i have my physical test then qap testing starting the 19th with is qualification appraisal panel interviews and testing. its a 900 question psyc test, a psyc interview, background test, medical test, lie detector test, and if i get through all that then i get to go to the academy.

Awesome Brian. And, as a CHP, you get to drive those frwy fast black & whites, pull over hot young chicks speeding, and do an occasional "O.J.-like" criminal chase down the highway. And you actually get paid for this!
Keep fishin' while you can. Best of luck on your tests, man.
thats guys i need all the luck i can get, the easy stuff well is a cake walk, like the post written test and this physical test that i am about to take, its the qap's that i am worried about.
hope to see ya on the water. oh ya as far as working schedule for chp right now, my buddy who just started is 3 on 4 off. ya 4 days off in a row, is that the life or what. lol

You can imagine the water clarity on the Carson after this storm. Peets coffee with cream! Yeah, this storm front may turn it off for a while. It was a great three weeks though!
Time for Steelhead boys. This fresh water will have them looking inland for sure. Anybody out there practicing their two-handed Spey? Single-hand Scandi. Watcha got?
just a few pics from a while back. i think, maybe not, is it bad not to remember when u fished a place. oh ya the 7th
the fish of the day, dont know how he got the fly in his mouth
dont know how well this comes up but there are 2 browns on this redd. pretty nice to see

Hmmm. What do I got? Single Spey, Double Spey, Snap-T right handed, Snap-T left handed. Still can't do a Snake Roll to save my life.
Don't need to practice using the two handers since I've been fishing them. I've been fishing the Lower Yuba over a month with my Spey and my switch. I haven't fished my single handers since early September.
This rain should bring up more fish. Send me in, Coach.
ab, if u go to the yuba and see a guy about 6 ft 200 lbs with more than likely a big big guy near him within 50yrds come down and say hi. ill have a mount me hat on as well as a orange chest / back pack on.

Damn, I got to get out there and pop the steelhead cherry. Alastair had a closer look at the fish I had last Saturday on the Yuba than I did, and he said it looked like a steelhead, and hell, it sure broke off fast enough to be a steelhead. Who knows.
I am hoping to get a switch rod for the Yuba/Feather/etc. What weight is yours AB? I was thinking 7 (I currently have a 4, and two 6wts).
Brian, can folks still recognize you by your unique tan?

I'm fishing a 6 weight. There is enough backbone to subdue inland Steelhead and throw those heavy tips and big flies.
AB
Edit: A 7 weight would not be a bad idea if you wanted more stick to put the big hurt on fish. It would allow you to subdue some of those coastal pigs in the northwestern corner of the state.

A 6' 200 lb. guy with a "mount me" hat on? That scares me. Just kidding. I'll definitely say "hi" if I see you. Sometimes I drift a red 10 foot Outcast pontoon boat from the 20 bridge to the private take-out past Sycamore. It's hard to miss that.
i think i seen u last week floating on down, i was at the second set of redds past the 20 bidge. the first set is just past the cliff hole, then an long shallow gravel bar then the second set of redds. i was with alastair and my buddy george that day. he is a big big boy definitely cant miss him. but ya next time say hi.
as far as rods, right now i am using a 10ft 6wt scott with a fighting butt for my steelhead around this area. but when i do pick up a switch it will be a 7wt just so i can have the extra lil bit of power for coastal steelhead. my buddy george uses a 11ft 7wt for a switch rod and does very well with it.

What type of flies are you spey guys using on the Yuba? Big egg sucking leeches or traditional wet flies. I was swinging a silver hilton and a winged wet for a little while yesterday. My Otter spey cast and snap and duck cast need some help. haha I was using a skagit head with ten feet of T8 in a tailout. Not one hit. Went back to the old single hander so I could land a few fish.

Depends If I'm swinging with a floater I'll just use a tan birds nest size 10-12. On a sinking line its an egg sucker or a bugger no need to get too fancy.
codym and i will be drifting the yuba tomorrow. maybe well see some of you guys out there. well be in a wooden driftboat. its like a fire truck coming down the river, you cant miss it

Funny how this Carson thread became a Steelheading thread.
As for flies on the Yuba, I try different things. Earlier, I was Skagit dredging a #6 black rubberlegs stonefly with a type 6 tip. Lately I have been swinging a #6 brown woolly bugger with a type 3 tip. During the summer, I was using a soft hackle called Partridge and CDC (size 12). I used that with a dry line. To be honest, I don't use as many traditional pattern on the Y as much.
But this year I plan on experimenting with tube flies. I bought some Anderson's Blue Light Specials and Black Light Specials and some hooks the other day. His flies have worked for me in the past, so I am sure that these flies won't disappoint.
