Other options this Winter

Hey guys, I haven't posted much here recently for different reasons. It looks like the Winter fighting is already starting up. I just want to remind you guys that there are LOTS of other options for winter fishing other than Putah. The last 2 years I hardly fished Putah in the Winter and didn't really miss the crowds or all the BS that goes along with it. Poaching, fishing spawners, trampling redds, etc. Yes you can catch big fish there in Winter but it's really not the kind of fishing I enjoy most, I don't have a need to catch 20" + spawner to get my fly fishing fix. Sure Putah is close to home but there are much better waters not too far away. Get out and try the Pit, Lower Sac, Upper Sac, Truckee, East Walker, Carson, etc. You can catch great fish in these waters in the Winter with a fraction of the fishing pressure Putah gets. Not to mention Winter Steelhead! For all you newbs to Putah, fishing other waters will broaden your knowledge by learning different places and techniques and you will learn quickly that Putah is not nearly the great place to fish like many make it out to be.

Get out and explore this Winter, the option are endless......

I totally agree with ya Rich. Unfortently snow can be a problem getting to some of those great waters you mentioned. Hey you have a 4x4 lets get some of that winter fishin in buddy ! At first a few weeks ago I was dreading the end of the general trout season but actually am now kinda looking forward to finding some new winter spots this year. The valley tailwaters are ok but not really what I preffere. Now is a great time to get up to the mountains and enjoy some good fishing, Should only get better the next month or so. Low crowds always after labor day weekend are a major plus.

Well said Packrat, but before the soap boxes come out in full force, PCT is not looking for a fight over the winter fishing of spawners (what good would it do anyway?-hasn't made any difference in 2 years has it)? When I say we are pushing the issue, its from a positive educational approach, not confrontational. There are a lot of fishers that don't know what redds look like or, so they claim, didn't know they were fishing to spawning fish. PCT will not get involved in, support, or condone any ugly exchanges that might occur about this subject on the forum this winter. We will work towards protecting the fish, as always.
