Not sure where to post this but, here goes. Have any of you caught the fish of a lifetime and saved the fly, never to be used again and kept it somewhere, like on your hat or something?
I have a few retired flies that have some sentimental value. One is a 2/0 Black Death fly that I caught my first Tarpon on. Actually I caught eight Tarpon on it before I retired it. I have a 2/0 Marquesa Sunrise that I caught several Tarpon from another trip. I have a 3/0 ALF Stir Fry that got beat up by a bunch of Dorado from a trip to Loreto.
you can buy a picture frame that has a spot for your photo and a second spot to put the fly you caught the fish in the picture with...did that make any sense ?
Hello Ty, I caught a huge Alpers Rainbow in Sotcher Lake in the Eastern Sierras a few years ago while float tubing with my "partners in slime" and my buddy Allen got a great picture of her on his digital camera before I slid her back in the water. The fly I caught her on is a size 6 Hornberg which is now imbedded in the picture frame that houses the 8x10 photo of us. If you're ever in Creative Sports in Pleasant Hill, you'll see it among lots of awsome fish photos hanging on the walls. Tight Lines, Viking.
I have a chewed up montana brown stonefly nymph that I caught a huge sea run brown from the Trinity back in 1982. I stuck in in my hatband of an old stetson I used to wear when I fished.
Yup ..20 S&M olive first ever trout in California, at Putah. At 23 3/4 inches I now know it may also be the biggest trout I ever catch. Sad ending though.... I lost it the other dayÂ

How did you lose it? Your not supposed to be fishing with a "retired" fly! lol. I have yet to do so. Haven't caught the big one yet I guess.

No, but I wish I had. My biggest fish on a dry fly was a 22 inch rainbow caught at Sullivan's Pond, part of Silver Creek in Idaho. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Silver Creek, it is a famous Idaho spring creek that is heavily pounded by thousands of anglers every Summer. Thus, it was a real highlight to catch such a good fish on this stream. I caught it on a Callibaetis Transitional Dun (an emerger) that was created by a well-known Idaho tyer named Renee Harrop. I wish I had retired the fly since I tied this fly in several colors and shades and I don't remember the exact fly I caught the fish on.

Threw it in my box with my split shot ..in its own compartment an everything....said box took dunk took said fly out to dry, and all though I would never accuse my better half of such trechery, I think it got "cleaned" away . Â

Oohhhhh, so you retired it, but still had it in your fly box?, and you just took it out to dry the other day? I was thinking you left it out to dry from when you first put it in retirement, and never put it away.
