I haven't given up on the carp yet. I don't know if they are still there though. Yeah, the mackerel really fight hard on a light fly rod. Sometimes they hit the fly on top just like a dry fly. Really fun.
Do you eat em ? I've had mackerel at sushi places and it was pretty good. Were abouts in the bay did you catch these mackerels ? Also makes some good live bait for lingcod, stripers, and halibut.
I'm fishing for them off a tugboat in Oakland. The inner harbors are full of them. Starting to see some herring as well and they take a fly too. We eat some of them and freeze some for striper and sturgeon bait when we go up river. The mackerel taste great. We just grilled them on the Bar-b-que. Unfortunately, we don't have a way to keep them alive for the halibut fishing in the Bay.
