New to Fly Fishing. Help?

This time of year...& for the next month what would be good to use in the Putah Creek, such as in flys? I always have great catch rate using a #12 hook w/ salmon egg. What does it mean by patterns? Is it the way the fly is tied or is there a certain casting pattern from fly to water?

Fishkiller (ouch!), nix the #12 hook and salmon egg technique and learn to fly fish. This will please the board you are writing on and help keep the Putah, as well as other waters, in good shape. Consult a knowledgeable fly fishing friend or join a casting program at a local shop to learn the basics. Its not as difficult as one might think.

Move away from the dark side.

Tight lines... (without salmon eggs)

Fishkiller, by different patterns people are referring to different type of bug imitations.  If you go to a fly shop you will see what I am referring to, and yes, they are all tied differently, although there are some similarities between patterns.  Fly fishing is more about the drift after your cast, not so much about the cast itself.  As long as you can cast where you want the fly to drift you are in good shape.  So to answer your questions a different pattern or fly technique is associated with how you present/drift the fly, on top of the water, below the water, dead drifting, stripping it in, swinging it, etc, not necessarily how you cast.

Actually Drifter, thanks for answering his question. A courtesy I neglected to add.

That's what I figured. It sounds like he's trying to piss people off by saying "I always have a great catch rate using a #12 hook w/ a salmon egg.". Also, why would you use a name like that in a fly fishing forum if you're trying to get help?
