Took a little walk starting last friday up the west walker river living out of a pack for 3 days. First time I have ever did this so it was quit a learning experience. First of all these knees ain't 20 years old any more, It can hail and be 35 degrees in august, Dehydtrated food sucks, Take a tent, Lighten the pack by 10 lbs, Marmots are really cool, And a trout can be caught with bare hands . The fishing was really slow, Landed maybe 10 fish the whole time, A few cutts from a lake and a few nice sized rainbows from the river. Size was pretty good just not enough of em. I guess walking several miles from the nearest road or campground dosen't always mean good fishin. I do admit I was more involved with the whole backpacking thbing this time rather then the fishing. Lots of highs and lows but man it was a really cool trip.
Packrat, I tried a side trip sunday morning to the east walker desperate for a good day of catching and the darn river was way to high. I new it was a gamble since I couldnt check flows. October should be prime brownie time, Hey man ya need a fishin partner on that one ? Oh and Ty the fish caught by hand was a beat up planter. Next stop, 3 days and 2 nights this weekend on the east carson.
Did you start out of Leavitt Meadow or head up the trail from the trail head section? Those fish may have been pounded pretty hard by this time of year and the water level may have changed a lot with late summer? Did you get up to Lane and Roosevelt Lakes or any others, maybe Fremont? How about Kirman Lake?
I have some great memories from fishing the WW and Roosevelt lake. Not sure why but never did any good in Lane. Years ago in July I was snowed on while camped at Roosevelt.

Lightfoot, I too have had some great times up on Roosevelt. Great campsite around the backside of the lake near a small meadow section in the lodgepole pines. And, yeah Lane can be a little iffy at times. Though I'm sure you have seen those big cuts moving past the shore from time to time and watched them feeding out in the middle. Roosevelt does give it up and provides great fishing for cuts when the season is right.
Too bad it wasn't producing at the time for Shaun. The fall should be awesome, though. Nice country!
This time of year would be perfect for streamer or nymph and sink tip tactics, especially with a float tube for larger cuts near the drop off sections of the lake. I've actually hiked a float tube, waders and fins up that trail to Roosevelt. Nutty.
Yeah, the wind up there can be a challenge. Awesome country though.
Heading for a short two dayer on the Silver Fork tomorrow. Any news?
