Hey all, I'm heading out to the Truckee and the Little Truckee. I still consider myself a rookie and I always get nervous that I'm gonna get skunked on new water. I've looked at a few other posts, but are there any other tips you guys have out there, such as tippet sizes, methods etc.?
I am a rookie too so don't have much advice other than there is heaps of pocket water from the Glenshire Bridge up towards town. When I was there 3 weeks ago flows had moved up and fishing was slow by all accounts. I was fishing 4x down to 5x, but most guys were going down to 6x. All I did was nymph under an indicator and I did OK and go into a few fish. (Had quite a few on my small Putah midges ???) Listening to some of Brian's posts sounds like the fishing has been pretty good up there. I am sure the other guys will have more and better information for you. Anyway hope you have a good trip.

Going myself in a few days. The stretch from the dam to town gets hit pretty hard by bait guys, downstream from old town is Glenshire rd, lots of access, some pocket water, a few long knee deep runs. The local guys at the Ace Hardware(fly shop inside) say Glenshire may have a few less fish, but typically bigger. Good luck, if you're there the 2nd-4th and see a tall(6'8") tattooed guy, say hi, I'm Toby. Also Brian Clemens has some good Truckee info posted. Probably already saw it, but worth mentioning.

CRAWFISH CRAWFISH CRAWFISH. size 2 and 4, orange and brown, sqwala nymphs, yes i said sqwala nymphs size 8-12, pupahs tan or olive size 16, dont need a crap load of weight, flows arent that bad, especially if your flys are weighted. seemed to get most of the fish yesterday on some type of stonefly immitation, but my bigger fish nailed the crawfish. cant go wrong with a crawfish patter for your first fly. and dont be afraid to swing it, or even work your rig like a streamer set up. some of my bigger fish have come off this method, yes i didnt land them, but they do come up and out of the water like they have mad cow disease. anyways as far as wading its easy, i wet wade all day, from am to night, a swim maybe mid day as well. here is the main problem right now, and have noticed it gettin worse over the last few weeks as the fishing has gone down as well. water temp. is gettin warmer and warmer. best fishing is early early am, and i mean early, and late.
was out yesterday with alex and his mom. SHE IS A TROUPER. kept up with us like a champ and is twice our age. she hooked up into a hand full of fish, one on the first cast at the first spot of the day, she never landed any of them, i think it was because it was her first time indicator fishing, and is used to dry fly fishing, but she had a blast. alex hooked into a bunch i would say 10 landing about half of those, all 16-18 inchers, as far as me, hooked into about 15, landed 10, hooked 4 hugh fatties and landing 2 of the 4, both where 21"ers and fat as fat could be. very slow after about 12pm, but seemed to pick up fish all day in the shaded areas as well as the deeper runs.
ill post the pics up of the trip tomorrow on my post.
my advise, get there as early as ur body will let you, and just fish, fish, fish, until u cant fish no more. then fish a lil more after that. glenshire up is good, especially if a hatch comes off. dont stay in just one spot give it 15-20 cast if nothing keep moving. fish have been staying close to the bank and in areas u wouldnt even think there would be one. i spooked out a fat brownie yesterday that was about 2ft off the bank. very suprised it was in this hidey hole. but goes to show ya, fish first then wade out. anyways thats what i have been doing, stick and move stick and move. cover a lot of water and u will find fish.

Thanks for the help guys. We had a great time. No big fish but plenty of fish any how. Thanks Brian, I had a few of the crawfish imitations but didn't use them. I don't know why. Maybe because I'd rather catch small ones than none at all. I wasn't real confident that I would have been successful with that type of rig. So I stuck to what was working. Caught my first browns which was cool. Also spent some time on the NF yuba in sierra city. All in all a great weekend. Fished across the river from bear, watched a bald eagle cruising around for fish above sardine lake, ran into a rattler and a couple of deer. So even if I caught zero fish it would have been a great time. That's what I like so much about fly fishing.
