I will be in Ione, CA on a Friday for work, so I figured I would sleep in my car or something and fish on Saturday. I was thinking the Stanislaus. I will be solo and wading, so I figured the upper. Any suggestions would be great. Fies, locations, anything would help. Open to any other waters in the area as well.
Just returned from day trip along Hwy. 108. Clarks Fork and Upper MF is brown and cold with tons of debris. SF by Strawberry is white water. Below Beardsley is a wash, with water raging over spillway...I didn't want to get the camera wet--could have gotten a "free" Prime Shine if I would have left the car long enough on the bridge.
NF along Hwy. 4 still has pretty high flows, too. Not sure how things are on other side--both Ebbetts and Sonora Passes are open!
Not trying to change your plans, but with a Friday job in Ione, have you also considered Hwy. 88 corridor?

Sorry to here the bearrdsly trip was a wash out . The flow chart only shows up till the 13th, Must have just spilled over. My silver fork weekend got wasjed out as well, silver lake releases were at 200 cfs so I thought better of it and tied fly's all day.
Managed so far to tie 30 decent what i think are fishable fly's and a huge pile of garbage fly's. Just need to get this runoff over with and go show em to some fishes ! Preferebly somewhere the fish don't have a PhD in entomology .
Hey Jeff...ouch on the Beardsley/MF trip!! Kayak time, 'eh? May/June is just the time for looking at good lake opportunities, or remote tribs. Blow up the float tube, pontoon or take out the pram, and go float. Manzanita Lake near Lassen may be looking good for sippers after this coming weekend. Iron Canyon, too. Couple of others for alternative early season.
PM me if you like.
From FishFirst Report:
Baum Lake is fishing well with hatches of BWOs on cloudy days and a few callibaetis on sunny days. Black streamers are getting bigger rainbows and browns fished on a sink tip line around weed beds. Best access from a float tube or pontoon boat. Be sure to bring an anchor to hold in the current.
Davis Lake (near Portola off hwy 70) Best fishing is from 9am to 5pm with fish feeding on blood midges, callibaetis and a few damsels. In the morning use your float tube and fish smaller beadhead nymphs and midges under an indicator. In the afternoon, trout will move into the shallows. Walk the shore at Freeman, Coot Bay and Cow Creek and sight cast for cruising trout. Use a slow retrieve on an intermediate or floating line with a damsel or smaller bugger such as a wiggle tail with a blood midge dropper. Good numbers of 14-20 inch rainbows caught last week. Look for the damsel migration to increase in the next few weeks.
Pretty tough day Saturday, more driving than fishing. Looks like family and friends will keep me at bay this weekend. Yeah, I'm planning on checking the tubes, getting them ready for a father-son outing hopefully the following week! Thanks for the info--expect some mail!
