Bono - you ever use a ys nymph pattern? Those must work at Putah, though I've never tried one.
Hatch started around 7:00 and lasted til dark, getting stronger as it got darker.
Lots of little fish rising... I must have gotten 30 grabs, little back flips, and slashes, but only 1 little 5 incher hooked. The little fish aren't very good at grabbing big flies.
One nice fish chased a caddis dropper I had on the back of my dry, but I missed em.
Nymphed my way all over access 5 and 4 with no luck the the 3 hours up til dark.
Mosquitos are starting to come out in force too, and the poison oak on the trail out to the island is encroaching, so be careful and bring your repellant.
Gorgeous night... not a breath of wind, and mid 70's til dark.
Thanks for the report JL and unfortunately sounds like things are still tough. Yes I do use a sally pattern that I tie and have had luck with at times, usually during the spring and early summer and at access 5 and above access 1. Well I'm heading out right now with a group to try our luck. Bono
Sweeneys has a few Y S patterns. have tried a couple of them.I have caught fish on them, but I always use what Iam more confident with first.I guess you could say I have not really put them to the test........
I've been tying up a batch of yellow stimulators after I got swarmed by some sallies last Thursday. I saw a 6 incher feed on a few of them near #5 - this guy will grow up to be a monster one day...
use a yellow body #16 white softhackle in the film or barely submerged. Give it 1/2" gentle pumps to imitate struggling. They emerge like baetis, not by crawling out of the water like other stoneflies. Tie small and very minimal. Get ready to catch plenty of fish, even some more than once!
