ok...so..my life long fishing buddy and i have been fishing putah creek for well over 20 years..for the most part we were bait spinning reel nazis and im sure i will go back to the spin reel when i bring my neices or mom to the creek like i do every year...just for the simple fact that i want them to expeirience what i was born to love...i think actually if everybody fished the world would be a better place...nature...a fishing pole and the loud silence of the outdoors is a big reason why i still draw breath...but anyways my buddy and i just recently took back up the most natural fishing form known to man as far as im concerned and thats "fly fishing" lately him and i have been goin up to access one 3 to 4 times a week basically to hone in our casting and drifting skills...then it was time to figure out what to use at what time of day which is confuzzling the hell outta us...we went out almost every other day and got skunked everytime until.....my buddy hooked into a massive native rainbow(somewhere around acess 3 to 5 lol) and guess what? the bastard straightened out his hook no i got skunked once again and had to hear him rave about it over and over lol who could blame him tho...i was jealous as hell lol...but then two days later i used what he used and that was a wd40(black) we both ripped into monsters at the same spot and both times our hooks were straightened...3 times total...flies were either bought at vacavilles guns n stuff and berryessa market in winters...i think we need to hit mr. bono up for sum flies that arent made outta bread ties evileye lol but anyway...that day we were spot fishing because of the clarity and i seen at least 8 to 9 monsters where we were now they are all gone from what i can tell...is the spawn over? and did they cruise all the way back down towards the diversion? cuz i cant see a fish anywhere anymore...first time we spotted them up at one in the spawning beds now they are gone...then we seen them way down towards the lake and now they are gone...lol...we are still trying to fingure out the hatch...is there any literature on putah creek hatches or a putah creek hatch chart we can look over? we both have fly fever and its here to stay...HELP!!!!!

The spawn is pretty much over.  Now it's time to fish the SAW sections of the creek with a little more weight and longer leaders.  The fish are still there and can be caught.  Or, you can explore other waters and let the fish recover from the spawn.

I feel your pain with the straightened hooks.  My secret weapon is a #24 midge pattern.  They don't make those hooks in heavy wire.

They are definitely still there.  This morning my buddy showed me some pics of a "26 beast they caught yesterday late afternoon.  The spawn is over and they are acting like regular fish again.  So look for them in the typical spots, behind rocks, logs, places they can hide.  They're not gonna be out in the open any more.

SAW = slow ass water. You can catch those big boys all year round, if you know where to look.

In SAW you might get a 10 minute drift; most SAW is present now; once the flows are up there aren't too many SAW areas!

Nice to see the SAW technique mentioned agian !!! It's one of my favorite ways to fish putah. You just have to ask yourself this.....Am I willing to make drifts that can last minutes and then do it for hours at a time ? A few beers is a must in this kinda fishin biggrin

there isn't any one answer to that question. play with your depth beneath you indicator until you find them. then hold on. wink

As Emerger just said, you don't know what depth the fish are holding at, so it's important to adjust your indicator to get your flies to the fish's level.  They could be hugging the bottom or hanging in the mid-depths.  Just experiment.  Every hole will be different.

A good way to work different depths is to add a few trailers as well.  You put on 2 trailers spaced at 12"-18" and you'll be working a larger range of water....especially good in the SAW.

The bad aspect of that is that you can lose a lot more flies at once.

A trailer is something that I lived in back in the days when i drove an el camino and wore a mullett or in this case its the bottom fly in a 2 fly rig which in most cases is smaller and or lighter than the top fly, at least thats the way I like to assemble that rig. Bono
