New to Putah, Norcal, and the west side of the Sierras...

I have yet to fish anywhere but the eastern sierras. I grew up there and I know that I can catch fish there. Perhaps it's just because I have yet to fish elsewhere, but I feel a little intimidated when I think about fishing anywhere but the eastern sierras. I'm still relatively new to fly fishing, so that probably doesn't help haha. I plan to get a car soon; and the very first day that I do, you better believe that I will be somewhere fishing. Most likely it will be Putah seeing as it's the closest, and honestly... I welcome a challenge.

That being said, I'd really love to make my first outing a success or at least give myself the best opportunity for success. For all you experienced fishermen of Putah, what is your favorite fly for a particular season? If I were to only bring 5 flies to Putah, what would they be? If you can, pictures of the flies would be fabulous so that any tiers out there, or future tiers (like me), can give it a shot.

I like the idea of the fly swap for getting successful flies out to people, but seeing as I'm a very elementary tier, I don't think my entry would come close to the quality of flies that I would receive. I'm hoping this will serve as a template for new and old fishermen alike. Hopefully some of those proven catchers will make there way onto this thread so I know what to tie/buy. Or if any of you good tiers are feeling gratuitous, my birthday is coming around and I could sure use some proven Putah flies biggrin

-Jon

Oh, and you don't have to reveal your secret fly... cause I wouldn't!bleh

Bono sells flies that are all putah fish catchers. Hit the link for hand-tied flies for sale.

I realize Bono's flies work seeing as he is a guide for Putah and offers flies for fishing Putah on this forum about fishing Putah. But what has proven good for you? I'm sure that you use flies other than those for sale, or at least variations of them.

Small PT's work well . small dark colored (black, brown, olive) midges with some flash. egg sucking leech on the swing. wooly's, CJ's. although what I throw is never what the next guy is throwing. That is the beauty of your imagination and tying. Trial and error my friend with the fly tying. good luck to you!
