I hadn't been to Putah since Thanksgiving weekend, so I ran up today and braved the elements, donning my new Putah Creek Trout hat that I got at the meeting last weekend.
I was surprised that the flow was still so low, 50 CFS. The water is low and very clear, even after the rain of the last couple of days. The weather worked it's magic as far as clearing out any Saturday crowd on the creek. There were a few heavy showers that passed through but it wasn't too bad. It really came down a few times during the day.
Being Valentines Day and without girlfriend, I expected to see Brian combing the creek banks in search of a new girlfriend, but sadly I never saw him out today.
Fishing was pretty slow, got a couple of nice fat 14" natives and had an absolute hog on for about 30 seconds. I got a couple of looks at him in the clear water from about 10 feet away, he was huge. After I set the hook and he turned and began shaking, it looked like he was the size of a koi. I'd guess he was a good 24+". Unfortunately I'll never know for sure. All fish took a size 20 S&M nymph. There was a decent hatch in the PM, BWO's and mayflies, but no rises.
A couple of things I determined about the Putah Creek Trout hat . . . it looks good, but does not attract fish on it's own. Can't rely on the hat! Actually have to work the stream.
The meeting last weekend was great. It was fun to meet so many of the people who post in person. I'd urge everyone who is able to get involved with the organization. It's an opportunity to really work on improving Putah, and there is a bit of groundwork to do. It's easier done when spread amongst hands. If you're going to the Pleasanton Show, we should have some introductory flyers on Putah Creek Trout out on a few of the tables at the show.
nice report oneweight. unfortunatly you are right no gf for valentines days, which is a plus dont have to buy anything. but did buy myself a few things, new phone, new thermals, and finally got me a gym membership. anyways with that said i wasnt on putah either. Had to be at work today which it wasnt to slow today, to me valentines day is just another day as of right now. being single is a blast, i fish all day everyday that i can and dont have to answer to anyone.
