Fishing isnt about catching fish, its not about who caught the most, or who caught the biggest, its about the experience that you have on the water, and the life long bonds you make with others on the journey to becoming a better person inside.
Not ALL the redds are marked. Redds could be anywhere hopefully there are redds where nobody knows for the fishes sake. Anyways a redd might have fish on them , it might not. The thing to really look for is a clean gravel river bottom. No moss in one particular area an area where a fish has cleaned up the bottom and dug down to the gravel. You can see the females digging their redds sometimes. Pretty much good not to be to close to them at all.
Both guys are right. Putah doesn't have a helluva lot of gravel bars so chances are if you see one it is a redd, even with no fish on it at that time or the ribbons are missing. I went out this morning for a couple hours and there are some ribbons around still so some are marked. Bad news is on the way out I say two idiots(flyfishermen) hammering the hole fishing right on top of the redd that was marked with at least three ribbons I could see. Some things never change.
Putah creek is defenitly on the tough side of the spectrum when it comes to california trout rivers. I'd say start out with pretty small stuff, 18's and smaller, and just fish hard, and have fun. Getting the correct depth and a good drag free drift is the most important thing. Getting the correct depth does not always mean scratching gravel ! Experiment. GOOD LUCK. Maybe I'l see ya out there, I'll be bummin around putah all weekend.
SEE ANY AREA WITH CLEAN ROCKS = REDDS ALL WAYS STAY ON MOSSY STUFF AND WALK SLOWLY AND WEAR POLARIZED SUN GLASS . WILL BE THERE SAT & SUN DRIVING BLACK SUV SEE YA THERE AFTER 11:00 AM MOSES
Yo, RGLOFT, I myself am a newbie to the sport. I took a lesson 4 years ago in the Carson River, and it was a great time. I finally bought my gear and have been going to Putah every weekend since August of 2008. Finally landed my first on a glo bug on the shore, no waders yet. but when i finally got my waders, it's been on like KONG. I always fish under the bridge. I'll be there SATURDAY fo sho!!!!! Under the bridge. If you see a 2008 TOYOTA TUNDRA grey parked that's me. Look for a big Filipino dude with an Indiana Jones look a like hat with camo waders. Be glad to fish with you, dawg! I usually get there before everyone else. I'm parked at 6 am everytime i fish, in the water by 6:30. My friends call me "EARLY"
Hey Richiard, I just spoke to you on the phone telling you that i would be there tomorrow, Saturday, plans changed. My brother is taking his boat out for tonight, so i don't think i'll be making it for flyin on Saturday. I'm in the mood for some good eatin fish and we can't keep the fish in Putah at this time, so we are going for sturgeon and stripers. Don't mean to dis on you or anything like that. I'll keep you posted on when i'll be flyin Putah again. Good luck tomorrow, just remember patiernce and persistence always pay off big time.
I just joined this way cool site about 2 weeks ago and have been reading the forum. I just hope that santa brings me the reel I need so I can set up my new #5 fly rod. From the first day I heard about Putah Creek, I've been stuck in one gear. Ima slobberin all over myself to get out there. Been fishing all my life but have only fly fished like a half dozen times. Never for Trout or Steelies though. The name is Jerry and I'm hoping to see some or many of you in the near future out there in the creek.
Relax, lilsnapper. I was'nt talkin about me, i was reffering towards regulation wise. C & R baby. I'm in tuned with conserving that creek. I love that creek. It's the only place I can leave my B/S from work and enjoy the atmosphere. And beside that, I only preffer bay water fish, and catfish. Matter of fact just got home from Suisun Bay with my last sturgeon for the year, 62 inches.
