I haven't fished much this year. Had surgery. I'm starting to feel like its time to try for something. With the rain I'm wondering if the sand bar at the mouth of the Russian is open enough to start the steelhead moving. Thanks for any info, East Bay Ed
Nic is right. Yesterday it still had 1.5 foot visibility but after today it should be pretty muddy. Saw a couple small half pounders two weeks ago but that was it. Mostly a couple few salmon starting to appear in Healdsburg. Small pods of 6-7. Obviously can't touch those but it means the steelies should be here soon. Nobody seems to know if the mouth is open yet and I haven't driven out to check myself. The real action hasen't started yet but you can still run into a few this time of year depending on where you fish.I really wanted to take the 8wt. out today myself but instead played for 4 hours in the rain at Putah with the 5. So are they putting waterslides and a merry-go round up or just the super moto track out there?
Is it legal to fish the mouth of the russian ? I've thought about trying it at goat rock beach, Also down the road a bit is salmon creek, Can you fish the mouth there along the beach ?
I drove out to the mouth of the River yesterday during the rain. The mouth did not open yet.
Also, the river is NOT blown out. I can't say it won't get worse today (Tue.), but I wandered the shore near Forestville, and the flow has only changed slightly from before the rain.
It did NOT look muddy.
It makes me wonder where these other floks are getting their info??

Wet and wild!
Shon, I was just asking some people about fishing the mouth. I don't know the exact rules, but I think it's something like 250 or more from the mouth. Last week there was at least 10-12 visiblity and the water was gin clear. One night of mild rain and it shrank to 1.5 to 2 feet visibility. What do I know I only work 20 feet from the bank of the river every single day of my life!
I think he's talking about the new trail they cut. Ya know the one the berries will take over in a few years I hope, I have faith in the berry. Besides I think they even planted more berries. Why I dont know maybe to give someone a job to cut them.
I grew up on motorcycles, three wheelers and quads. So much fun. My cousins and I used to tear around on those suckers so fast out in the old cow pastures. No helmets or nothing, just tough little kids. The mentality about that stuff was different than now. I'll have to check out the shop next time I am in Napa. Now I tear around on skinny mountain bike tires, sometimes with only one gear! Yeah Matt, gotta have faith in the berry!
