I was at work today and I hop into a customers car(I'm A mechanic) and I couldn't beleive my eyes ! Lying on the passenger seat is the latest copy of north west fly fishing(Or something like that) and right on the front cover it says PUTAH CREEK !!! I did not read the article as I didn't have time. Anyone read it ? This cannot be a good thing, Putah already receives way to much pressure. Personaly I think these magazines are garbage.
Nope, Didn't read it. My lord, You mean theres actually a full page pic of our beloved putah hawgs ! Were gonna have every shiny new wader wearin, latte sippin fly fisherman on our creek this winter ! Better get up there early and stake your claim, Cuz I ain't sharing no spots unless I know you.
LOL... "...shiny new wader wearin..." I better get my waders dirtier or I am going to look like one of those latte sippers. By the way, I function well after a dose of mini-mart coffee.
I'm the same way, I did not read the article but quickly thumbed through it. There were some very nice pictures of Putah Creek. I'm sure that a few more people will beat their way to the creek. I was very disappointed that they did not interview or include a guy like Greg in the article??????
Why did they waste their time with some nerd who has never fished the creek before? Any writer could have done that. I guess maybe in the long run that will cause less people to hit I-80 and fly up there.
I wasnt a fan of this article at all. For one it mentions to fish behind spawning females and her suiters, when it should have talked about leaving them alone. And that article didnt mention anything about the conservation efforts that a few orginizations are doing to make putah creek a wild trout stream. But I guess we cant have it all. I doubt the plug in the mag will bring in a bunch of outsiders, and like it was said in a few other posts, putah is not a easy place to fish and you gotta put in time to learn her secrets.
Fishing isnt about catching fish, its not about who caught the most, or who caught the biggest, its about the experience that you have on the water, and the life long bonds you make with others on the journey to becoming a better person inside.
I skimmed the article while I was at work. The bossman is a fly fisherman, and he usually has a fly fishing magazine in the "other office." On a positive note, I'm glad to see in the sidebar that there were references to local guiding and instruction. Bono and Rick Fox will hopefully get some business out of the article. Sweeney's and the Sacramento shops got references, too.
Maybe i'll pick up a copy of that magazine I'm out of toilet paper . Seriously though I was thinking an article like that may bring Bono some clients and thats cool. Putah is hard man, I don't care what anyone says, Its the toughest river I fish, Putah is its own game.
Thanks for all the support guys,I get a little misty eyed just thinking about it!!But I too share the same fears about exposing the creek more than I already do with this web site (shame on me).As some of you already know I really struggle with the fact that I have probably brought alot of attention to the creek since the inception of the site and my business. Now I'm trying to use the site as a catlyst of positive change for the creek like the formation of PCT. A few weeks ago like some of you know a nice guy solicited info from myself and others about Putah creek for an article for a magazine in San Francisco called the SF Express. I exlained to him my concern of the exposure and told him the reasons why, with my concerns and other peoples same concerns he decided to change the format and write about the whole flyfishing culture instead. Mission accomplished! As far as exposure and new business from these other articles, I keep busy enough and dont really need the exposure ( Just ask anyone who tried to book a date with me...kinda like pulling teeth,I'm just a real busy guy for better or worse! Anyway thanks again to everyone for the great info for our readers to indulge in and thanks for you're support. Wow I sound like a politican it must be election day,get out there and vote.....then go fish!
Yeah thats not good about the article, there definately will be a lot more pressure on the creek now. I used to fish a steelhead stream on the olympic peninsula in Washington, it was full of steelhead. I fished it for 5 years and never saw another person on it and there were days after a nice rain where I would catch 10 or more mint bright steelies some of them were pushing 20lbs. Anyways a magazine called Salmon Trout And Steelheader published an article about it and it ruined it. The next time I went there their were about 15 cars parked along the logging road that was near the stream. Its not good when magazines write about small streams that cant handle the pressure! These writers are idiots and I am sure they never write about there favorite streams!!!!
I read the article and I wasn't all that impressed. The magazine is good enough for me to subscribe to, but I don't think the article will bring that much more pressure to the creek.
I have only fished it about six or seven times and have only caught fish less than half that since I have been living in Sacramento and I admit it is a difficult waterway to fish. There may be an initial influx of fishermen while the weather is still nice and while the article is still somewhat "fresh", but once the weather gets cold and nasty the orvis catalogs will stay home.
I agree with you guys that it was irresponsible for the writer to "encourage" drifting egg patterns behind spawners, but hey thats where a little discouragement comes into play from the locals.
Besides, like Shon said, Putah will kick their butts and then they won't be back.
btw, I will be out there Saturday with my starbucks and shiny waders....

I think the article will bring more pressure to the creek and at a time when the fish are the most vulnerable. There are going to be tons of guys standing over the spawners, even walking all over the spawning beds. Putah Creek can't handle that kind of pressure.

Just got to read it. I can't say it makes me happy ... that's for sure!
We'll have to wait and see what it does for the traffic on the water. My gut says not good. I have to agree with JT.
As a number of you have said, you can't just step on to the creek, catch fish ... but this "blanking' article sure tries to shorten the curve. At least the author did not put the GPS coordinates in the article. Geez.
Too bad that the article didn't mention the bear sightings of late!
